Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

A New Year resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to one or more lasting personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit.  The beginning of a new year is the perfect opportunity to make some improvements in your life, as it provides everyone with a fresh start and a chance to start over, no matter how badly the previous year ended.   These resolutions or promises often reform lifestyle changes.  Here is a list of some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions:

1.)                    Improve Career- Are you stuck in your current job?  If you feel it’s time to look for a new job, polish your resume and market yourself.   Or, use some of your industry contacts to secure a different position.  Networking is very important when looking for a new job opportunity.  If you need to take a few classes to move up in your job check out the available courses at a local community college and see if they match your interests.  Another option is to take classes through local adult education centers.  If your schedule is super-busy, look into taking a few classes online.  These days, there are many options and opportunities available.

2.)                    Improve Health- After enjoying lots of holiday goodies from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, many people use this time to get back on track and resume a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise.  If you need to lose a few pounds this year, closely look at your daily diet to see exactly what types of food you are eating.  Fitness centers offer numerous specials and deals during the month of January, which makes it the perfect time to join a health club.  However, if the monthly membership doesn’t fit your budget, make plans to walk with a friend a few days a week.  Having a partner to exercise with on a regular basis will motivate both of you to follow through with your commitment.  The other health-related old standbys are to quit smoking and drink less alcohol.

3.)                     Volunteer More- Find time in your schedule to volunteer, whether it’s through your religious organization, a local library, or a recreation center in your area.  There are many non-profit volunteer organizations that could use your help.  There’s always a child who can be mentored or a family who may need help with some household repairs.  If your time is limited, maybe you can donate some items to a worthy cause.

4.)                    Quality Time with Family and Friends-- Are you always running around after work with errands and different activities?  This year, resolve to slow down and spend more quality time with your family and friends.  Create a weekly family activity such as a movie night, pizza night or let the kids select one of their favorite pastimes on the weekends.  Have you been trying to get together with a friend, but just can’t manage to find time to squeeze in a cup of coffee?  Between email, cell phones, and text messages, there’s no reason you can’t keep in touch.  Find a way of communication and set a date to meet for lunch, a drink or even a walk.

5.)                    Keep a Journal of Awesome Moments—Take time to record some of life’s most precious memories.  Jot down some of the cute things that the kids have said recently or write about a fun family trip.  We are all so busy in our everyday lives, but it just takes a few minutes to capture some of the best anecdotes and moments.  As the kids get older, you’ll be glad you took the time to preserve the funny sayings and happenings.

6.)                    Manage Stress- Enjoy your life more.  Stop stressing out about the small stuff and you will notice a definite improvement in your physical and mental health.  Resolve to take a “me” day.  Schedule a vacation day from work or arrange for your husband or a relative to watch your children.  Then, do whatever you want.  Go to a matinee movie, spend the day shopping, or just relax on the couch with a good book.  The important thing is to make one of these dates a few times a year.

7.)                    Learn Something New- Maybe it’s time to explore a new hobby or enjoy the fun of learning a new language.  Taking a course through a local adult continuing education center is one of the best ways to keep a resolution.

8.)                    Try Something Different– Start a pot-luck ritual.  Make it a once-a-month gathering with friends.  Before your guests leave, set a date for the next get-together. Have you been meaning to start your own blog, but you don’t know where to begin?  Go to www.blogspot.com to get started.  It’s easy and it’s free and a great way for you to express your feelings and catch up with friends. Take time to explore your hometown.  Many of us take for granted where we live. You can resolve to spend more time learning about the history, culture, and people in your community.  Maybe you can check out a local band in the area or sign up for a guided nature walk in your neighborhood park.  Search all of the event listings in your area and pick an activity.

9.)                    Read Every Month—Even if you don’t have time to join a monthly book club, vow to read at least one book per month.  Whether it’s on your Nook or with a book from the local library, challenge yourself to learn about a new subject or activity or simply read for pleasure.

10.)                 Don’t Be Hard on Yourself—Okay, so you wrote an entire list of resolutions and by the third week in January, you haven’t been very successful in achieving your goals.  Give yourself a break and then try again the next day.  Post your resolutions in a central location to keep you motivated.

Hopefully 2012 will be the year you are finally able to try some of the things you’ve been meaning to, but haven’t been able to, in years past.  Good luck!

Preparing For The Next Hurricane

By Tricia Berwick

As I write this article, my family is preparing for Hurricane Irene, a monstrous storm that’s quickly heading up the East Coast with the Jersey Shore in its direct path.  My husband is busy in the backyard, securing the grill, patio table, and chairs. He’s also bringing everything from the front porch into the garage.  I hit the supermarket the other day, so now the dining room table is filled with bottles of water, batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable food items. We’ve heeded all the warnings and have taken the necessary precautions, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t nervous about getting through all of this.  You see, if it was just the two of us, then that would be okay.  In 1999, we managed to ride out Hurricane Floyd without any damage, but we were newly married and only needed to worry about one another.  But now that we have our children, we feel differently about the whole situation.  We’re responsible for these two little people and their safety is of utmost importance to us.  That’s why my husband just ran out to Lowe’s for some last-minute pieces of ply wood.  He’s not sure if we’ll need the materials, but for peace of mind, he would rather have it here.

Of course, now that our daughters are seven-years-old and completely aware of their surroundings, we couldn’t really hide our preparations.  So, we explained the situation as best we could and told them that we’ll keep them safe.  We also said that it’s going to be very rainy and windy outside, but everything would be okay.  It’ll probably be very loud, but we’ll play games and do different activities to keep their minds off of what’s happening outside.  To make them feel even more secure and less afraid during the storm, we promised the kids that we’ll have a big “camp out” downstairs.  This plan will keep everyone safely away from the windows while also providing comfort by being together in one place.

September is still considered to be prime hurricane season, so if there’s one in the forecast in the coming months, follow these tips to properly prepare your family.

1.)Cover all of your home’s windows with pre-cut ply wood or hurricane shutters to protect your windows from high winds.   Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.  Keep all trees and shrubs well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.  Secure your home by closing shutters, and securing outdoor objects or bringing them inside. Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.

2.)Turn off propane tanks and install a generator for emergencies.

3.)Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage, it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.

4.)Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

5.)Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency by visiting www.FoodSafety.gov.   The website has information regarding recalls and alerts, tips on how to keep food safe, how to determine if you have experienced food poisoning, and news and features.  There’s also a forum to report a problem and an opportunity to ask questions to experts.

6.)Listen to the television or radio for instructions or important updates regarding the weather conditions.  Before the hurricane hits, charge your cell phone.  If the power goes out during the storm, the cell phone may be the only way to communicate with loved ones.  Make sure you have the numbers of all of your family members saved in the phone.

7.)It’s important to plan ahead so that during an emergency you know what to do and how to get in touch with other family members.  The best way to do this is to create a clear family emergency plan. First, gather your family members (including your pets!) together for a quick family meeting, maybe over a pizza or before watching your favorite movie. Then, talk about some of the problems your family will encounter in a disaster and make a list of your family’s solutions.  Identify the responsibilities for each member of your household and plan to work together as a team.  Also, talk with members of your household and create an evacuation plan.  Planning and practicing your evacuation plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event.  In addition, learn about your community’s hurricane response plan.  Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for your pets to be cared for.  Before you know it, you’ll have a plan in place that everyone in your family can follow.   Type up the plans and make copies for everyone in the family.  Even if it seems like a time-consuming task to prepare the family emergency plan, it will be well worth it when you are trying to weather the storm with your loved ones.

8.)Make sure that your family has a seven-day supply of all medications, including prescription medicines and a fever-reducer for young children.  Also, have extra supplies of baby items including: formula, diapers, wipes, baby food, and bottles.

9.)It’s a good idea to fill up your gas tank and to stop at the ATM for some extra cash to keep in the house, too.

10.)A first aid kit is also extremely important to have.  Be sure it is well-stocked with band-aids, adhesive tape, anesthetic spray, safety pins, tweezers, scissors, and antibiotic cream.

Local Feature-Encore Dancewear

During the last few weeks of summer, parents and children flock to area stores for notebooks, pencils, backpacks and all of the other essential school supplies.  If there’s a ballerina or a gymnast in your family, it’s also the time to buy new outfits and accessories for another season of pirouettes, twirls, and somersaults.  From leotards and tights to tap, jazz and ballet shoes, Encore Dancewear and Activewear in Toms River has everything your family needs for a successful year of dance or gymnastics classes.  Since 1985, owner Bob Ernes has prepared local children and adults with all of the necessary supplies for these extracurricular activities.  With many years of experience in the business, Bob looks forward to helping little girls and boys look and feel great so they can enjoy the upcoming year of classes.   Even if you’re unsure about which items to purchase, you needn’t worry.  Upon entering the store, customers are assisted by Bob and his attentive, professionally trained staff  Marilyn and Sharon who will answer any question you may have.

“Most of the studios in the area send a specific list of requirements,” says Bob, who moved to Toms River from Long Island, New York 34 years ago.  “We go over the list with parents and talk to them.  We explain what the kids are required to have for each type of class.  There’s isn’t anything about dance that we don’t sell in our store.  We are a one-stop dance shop and one of the biggest in the state of New Jersey.  We have supplies for every age – from toddlers all the way up to adults.  We have something for everyone at Encore, and we make sure that all of our customers are prepared for another year of classes.  No one ever leaves our store without having everything that they need.”

Among the large assortment of items available at Encore, customers will find leotards, dresses, tights, dance bags, skating outfits, gift items and jewelry.  The store’s wide variety of footwear includes tap shoes, ballet shoes, pointe shoes, jazz shoes, lyrical shoes, gymnastic shoes, ballroom dancing shoes and hip hop sneakers.  Customers will find all of the top name brands in dancewear including Capezio, Bloch, Danskin, Mirella, Freed, Motionwear, Leo’s, Mondor, and Eurotard.

In addition to serving kids of all ages, Encore also provides dancewear for adults.  In fact, Bob works with many customers who are avid ballroom dancers.

“We have many customers who are who come into the store for ballroom dancing shoes,” says Bob.  “It’s extremely popular in this area.  We have dancewear for ladies and men. They enjoy getting shoes with a suede sole which do not grab the floor and provide better flexibility and more comfort while they are dancing.”

Bob has worked in the retail industry all of his life and strongly believes in providing his customers with the best available merchandise.  After receiving a degree in theatre arts with dance as a minor, he feels that this sets him apart from his competitors and explains that this is why he has been in business for so long.

“I take great pride in the products that I sell in my store,” says Bob. “I don’t sell inferior merchandise. One of our customers told us that a pair of our tights lasted her daughter for over two years.  People don’t mind spending a little more for quality items.  Throughout the years, we have always made it a priority to sell quality merchandise to the public.”

While buying durable products is important, it’s also necessary to find merchandise that fits properly.  Bob and his staff work with every customer on an individual basis.  It’s imperative for every dancer or gymnast to be comfortable in the proper attire.

“Everyone on my staff is completely professional and knows exactly how a shoe should fit properly,” says Bob.  We put the ped on which is a disposable sock and then we make sure the shoe fits properly.  Fitting the correct pointe shoe to the dancer’s foot is extremely important. That is the key.  The same for  the fitting on all types of dance shoes.

Bob’s busiest time of year is August through the end of October.  It’s during those months when parents are making the transition from summer vacation to school activities and getting the kids what they need.

Once everyone is settled back into the routine of school and is prepared for the year ahead, the store buzzes with activity again during the month of February as dancers prepare for competitions.  Spring is also a particularly busy time for the store.  Recital season always brings parents and children to Encore in preparation for the annual end-of-the-year performances.

Many parents are repeat customers who return to Encore year-after-year.  Ultimately, many dancers’ younger siblings who become interested in dance and gymnastics begin visiting Encore as well.  In fact, Bob says he has seen multiple generations of loyal customers return to his store.  They appreciate Encore’s dedication to providing quality service and products.

“After 26 years in business, we are confident that we truly know what we are doing, “says Bob. “We have mothers come in to see us who came for the first time when they were little.  Now, they are bringing their children to us as customers.  They are very appreciative of how knowledgeable we are.”

Encore Dancewear and Activewear is open every day, except Sundays.  If you are unable to get to the store, orders can be conveniently placed over the phone.  Encore accepts most major credit cards.  For more information, visit the store’s website at encorenjdancewear.com or give them a call at 732-270-9150.

Prepare Your Family For Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene is barreling down on the Tri-State area., a monster storm packing winds of more than 100 miles per hour as it batters the Bahamas. In the next few days, the storm could hit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, or even the Mid-Atlantic and New England states.

The storm will disrupt lives. Millions of people could be affected.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get ready. Now is the time to make preparations to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Family Disaster Plan

Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.

Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.

Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles.

Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact, so all your family members have a single point of contact.

Make a plan now for what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate.

Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.

Check your insurance coverage – flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance.

Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit.

Use a NOAA weather radio. Remember to replace its battery every 6 months, as you do with your smoke detectors.

Take First Aid, CPR and disaster preparedness classes.

Create a Disaster Supply Kit

Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food – at least enough for 3 to 7 days
— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
— foods for infants or the elderly
— snack foods
— non-electric can opener
— cooking tools / fuel
— paper plates / plastic utensils

Blankets / Pillows, etc.

Clothing – seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes

First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs

Special Items – for babies and the elderly

Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes

Flashlight / Batteries

Radio – Battery operated and NOAA weather radio

Telephones – Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards – Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods

Keys

Toys, Books and Games

Important documents – in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

Tools – keep a set with you during the storm

Vehicle fuel tanks filled

Pet care items — proper identification / immunization records / medications
— ample supply of food and water
— a carrier or cage
— muzzle and leash

Have A place To Go

Develop a family hurricane preparedness plan before an actual storm threatens your area. If your family hurricane preparedness plan includes evacuation to a safer location for any of the reasons specified with in this web site, then it is important to consider the following points:

If ordered to evacuate, do not wait or delay your departure. If possible, leave before local officials issue an evacuation order for your area. Even a slight delay in starting your evacuation will result in significantly longer travel times as traffic congestion worsens.

Select an evacuation destination that is nearest to your home, preferably in the same county, or at least minimize the distance over which you must travel in order to reach your intended shelter location. In choosing your destination, keep in mind that the hotels and other sheltering options in most inland metropolitan areas are likely to be filled very quickly in a large, multi-county hurricane evacuation event.

If you decide to evacuate to another county or region, be prepared to wait in traffic. The large number of people in this state who must evacuate during a hurricane will probably cause massive delays and major congestion along most designated evacuation routes; the larger the storm, the greater the probability of traffic jams and extended travel times.

If possible, make arrangements to stay with the friend or relative who resides closest to your home and who will not have to evacuate. Discuss with your intended host the details of your family evacuation plan well before the beginning of the hurricane season.

If a hotel or motel is your final intended destination during an evacuation, make reservations before you leave. Most hotel and motels will fill quickly once evacuations begin. The longer you wait to make reservations, even if an official evacuation order has not been issued for your area or county, the less likely you are to find hotel/motel room vacancies, especially along interstate highways and in major metropolitan areas.

If you are unable to stay with friends or family and no hotels/motels rooms are available, then as a last resort go to a shelter. Remember, shelters are not designed for comfort and do not usually accept pets.  Bring your disaster supply kit with you to the shelter. Find Pet-Friendly hotels and motels.

Make sure that you fill up your car with gas, before you leave.

Lodging at Universal Orlando Resort

By Tricia Berwick

If your family has ever vacationed at Walt Disney World in Florida, you know first-hand that staying directly on the resort’s property offers guests many advantages.  Convenience is always a key factor as well as extra access to the various parks.  It’s always a major plus to enter the amusement parks an hour ahead of everyone else to avoid the crowds or long lines.  The same is true for visitors at Universal Orlando Resort.

The three AAA Four Diamond Award winning on-site hotels are located in the center of the excitement at Universal Orlando.  While every hotel has a different and unique theme, each one offers the same comfort, convenience and various amenities.  All of the hotels offer world-class service and accommodations, recreation, and dining options.  Plus, each one is within easy walking distance of both Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme parks and the Universal CityWalk entertainment complex.

Hotel guests can enjoy an exclusive package of theme park benefits including: early park admission to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter one hour before the theme park opens (valid theme park admission required), Universal Express ride access which allows guests to skip the regular lines throughout both theme parks (this is a free benefit worth up to $87 per person, per day) and complimentary water taxis or shuttle buses to make getting around the resort fast and easy.  If your family would like to take advantage of these on-site benefits, there are three hotels to choose from at Universal Orlando Resort.

1.) Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando- If you love anything Italian, then this would be the right pick for your family. This luxurious hotel re-creates the charm and romance of the famed seaside village of Portofino, Italy.  There are even cobblestone streets and outdoor cafes to make guests feel as if they are strolling through the Italian countryside.  The spacious and comfortable guest rooms all feature authentic Italian furnishings.  In addition, the hotel boasts three themed swimming pools, a relaxing spa, and many restaurants.

2.)Hard Rock Hotel- Are there wannabe rock stars in your family?  If so, choose the Hard Rock Hotel which will make your gang feel like rock-n-roll royalty.  There are lots of recreation options to keep the kids busy, including a sand beach pool that immerses you in sound, not just water.  Of course, the Hard Rock Hotel would not be complete without authentic rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia.  During your stay, be sure to check out all of the memorabilia located throughout the hotel.  The legendary Palm Restaurant is another one of the hotel’s main attractions.  With an emphasis on personal attention and service, the Hard Rock Hotel strives to make everyone feel like a rock star during their stay.

3.)The South Seas at Loews Royal Pacific Resort—This hotel is unique because guests feel as if they have been transported to the South Pacific.  The lush tropical surroundings resemble an island paradise at this resort. Guests will dine on exceptional cuisine and relax on the white sandy beach which surrounds the lagoon-style swimming pool.

However, if staying on site at Universal Orlando Resort is not in your family’s plans, there are many other options to choose from.  Chosen based on quality, reputation and proximity to Universal Orlando, the Universal Partner Hotels are each located within minutes of Universal Orlando.  In addition, guests can enjoy bonus benefits at some of the partner hotels.  For example, guests can enjoy discounts on merchandise at select theme park locations, discounts on food and non-alcoholic beverages at select theme park and CityWalk locations, free scheduled transportation to Universal Orlando theme parks, and golf reservations and complimentary transportation to select area courses offered through the Golf Universal Orlando program.

When selecting a hotel, you can choose from one of three categories: luxury, moderate, or value hotels.  Luxury hotels include the following amenities: themed pool, multiple dining options, concierge desk, 24-hour room service, bell services, valet parking, spa services, kids club, and fitness center.  Moderate hotels all feature an outdoor pool, full service dining, concierge desk, room service, breakfast area, and bell services.  Value hotels include: an outdoor pool, breakfast area, and guest service desk.

In addition to the numerous hotels on and off-site, there are many vacation packages to choose from.  If your family chooses the “Blue Man Group” vacation package, you will receive a free upgrade to the Park-to-Park ticket, plus early park admission to Universal’s Islands of Adventure.  Three-night getaways start from only $349 per adult, tax inclusive.  “7 Nights-5 Theme Parks” provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy unlimited accommodations during this time frame.  Guests also have the privilege of early park admission to Islands of Adventure. This package starts at $1765 per family of four.  The “2-Park Getaway” package has guests choose the hotel of your choice and add theme park admission to enjoy both Universal Studio theme parks, plus early admission to Islands of Adventure.  This package starts at $239 per adult.  The “Exclusive Vacation Package is perfect for fans of Harry Potter.  With this package, your kids will enjoy early park admission to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter before the general public, and breakfast at the Three Broomsticks.  Plus, the package also includes hotel accommodations and admission to Universal Orlando Resort.  Four-night getaways start from only $299 per adult.  In addition to these specific vacation packages, you can also customize your own vacation experience based on the needs of your individual family.

If you mention that you’re traveling to Orlando with the family, most people will automatically assume that you’re visiting Mickey and Minnie Mouse and their friends at Walt Disney World.  However, the city of Orlando offers more than just WDW to its guests.  Universal Orlando Resort is also a place to make lasting memories with your family.   New attractions and rides are always being added which means families can return for multiple visits.  For more information, check out their website at www.orlandoresort.com or call 1-877-801-9720.

Best Local Places to Go Snow Tubing

By Tricia Berwick

If your family would like to have a winter family adventure over the next few months, plan a trip to one of the area’s ski resorts and give snow tubing a try.  One of the best things about this outdoor sport is that it’s a more affordable option than skiing.  This makes it the perfect activity for families or large groups of friends.

With snow tubing, you don’t need to purchase any equipment beforehand.  All of the tubes, known as “donuts” or “biscuits” because of their circular shapes, are provided by the resorts.  Also, it’s very simple to do and doesn’t require a lot of skill.  All you have to do is hop on a tube and ride down a slippery slope.

If you would like to get away for some quality family time, head to Pennsylvania’s Fernwood Hotel and Resort.  The hotel has single and family Pocono snow tubing and a tiny tot play area located directly on their grounds.  The Fernwood Winter Fun Center has something for every member of your family.  Even if there’s no snow on the ground by where you live, don’t worry; Fernwood makes its own winter wonderland for lots of tubing fun.  Families can purchase tickets for two-hour sessions which begin on the hour or buy the “all-you-can-slide” admission ticket at 5PM which provides guests with four hours of tubing enjoyment.  If your family would like to spend the weekend at Fernwood, there are many activities to keep the kids busy such as a game room, horseback riding, indoor pool, and special children’s events.  For the adults, there’s a spa and fitness center and plenty of shows and entertainment.  In addition, there are plenty of in-house restaurants to enjoy.  For more information, check out their website at www.fernwoodhotel.com.  Be sure to print out a few snow tubing coupons before your trip.

If getting away for a few days doesn’t fit your family’s budget, take a day trip to Vernon, New Jersey and visit the Coca Cola Tube Park in Mountain Creek.

Snow tubing is available through mid-March at Mountain Creek, so there’s still plenty of time to plan a day of family fun.  The Coca Cola Tube Park is open Thursday through Sunday.  Sessions rotate on 1-hour increments from the start time.  On Thursdays and Fridays, you can tube from 5-8 pm.  The price is $16 for a one-hour session.  On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the tube park is open from 10:30 am-4:30 pm.  The cost is $20 per hour.  If you would rather snow tube during the evening hours, visit the park on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 5:30-8:30 pm for a rate of $16 per hour.  To make reservations, call 973-827-2000, or you can also buy tickets online at wwww.mountaincreek.com.  It is strongly recommended that reservations be made in advance as the adventure sport often gets sold out.  Always call ahead to make sure space is available before your family heads out the door.  The resort accepts large groups of 30 or more so gather up your neighbors and their kids and have a snow tubing playdate.

Before you plan for a day of snow tubing fun, just keep a few factors in mind.  It’s important to note that riders must be at least 42 inches tall and at least five-years-old to participate.  Since there are height restrictions, snow tubing is best for those families with older children.  Also, most of the resorts require waivers to be filled out before you begin, so it’s a good idea to print out the paperwork beforehand and have it ready to go before you arrive at the park.

In Mahwah, families can enjoy 800 foot snow tubing runs at Campgaw Mountain.  The mountain, which is open every day, has six 800 foot runs with lifts.  The runs have varied levels of rollers and pitch.  Similar to Mountain Creek, all riders must be at least 42 inches tall.  Each session lasts two hours and guests are invited to enjoy unlimited runs during that time.  Tubes are provided and a surface lift is available to lift tubing enthusiasts back up to the top of the hill.   The price for a 2-hour session on a weekday is $16 and a weekend/holiday is $22.  However, snow tubing sessions are often sold out, so it’s best to check the available hours and purchase tickets ahead of time.  For more information, check out the resort’s website at www.skicampgaw.com.

One of the benefits of snow tubing is that after the ride is over, you won’t have to hike back up the hill.  A lift will safely bring you and your tube back to the top of the mountain for more fun.  Another snow tubing perk is that it provides a big thrill without a lot of skill, which makes it perfect for kids.  All youhave to do is steer the tube by shifting your weight from one side of the tube to the other.  If you want to move to the left, just move your weight over to the left, and vice versa.  That’s all there is to it!

If your family is looking for a different type of experience this winter, give snow tubing a try.  It’s not as expensive as skiing and it doesn’t require lots of equipment to participate.  This is great because if for some reason your kids are not enamored with the sport, you’re not stuck with a lot of supplies that you won’t be able to return.  Pick a day or weekend that works best for your family, research a few places and check out the resort’s rules and regulations.  Then make a reservation, pack up the car and head out the door for a day of winter family fun.  Just remember to dress warmly and to bring some hot chocolate to keep everyone nice and toasty.  Of course, don’t forget the camera, too.  You’ll want to capture all of the smiles and giggles as your children slide down the snow tubing trails.
