Your Child Today’s Ocean City Fun Guide

By Tricia Berwick

Looking for a new family-friendly beach destination?  Pack up the kids and head south to Ocean City, sometimes known as OC, or OCMD.  This Atlantic Ocean resort town in Worchester County, Maryland is just a few hours away from the Jersey Shore and is widely known in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States as a popular vacation spot.  In fact, during summer weekends the city hosts between 320,000 and 345,000 vacationers and the resort area accommodates approximately 8 million visitors per year.

Ocean City extends just over nine miles from the southern inlet to the Delaware line. The seaside community offers hotels, motels, apartment houses, shopping centers, residential communities, and condominiums.   There is something to meet every traveler’s needs. Vacationing with a large family and need larger accommodations?  Try renting one of the town’s condos for more living space and a kitchen which allows families the opportunity to prepare their own meals and save money.  The southern tip of the resort features the Ocean City Boardwalk which is the main shopping district and entertainment area of the town.

If this type of resort area sounds like something your family would be interested in, Use to plan your next vacation.

Beaches- Ocean City boasts ten miles of family-friendly ocean beaches.  Free beaches make this a very desirable beach town.  The beaches are open to the public every day from 6 AM to 10 PM.  For those who love to catch some great waves, two beaches are reserved every day for surfers.  In addition, one section of beach along the inlet is designated for surfers.  Guests who are interested in surf fishing are allowed to cast their lines from the beach, but just need to remain 50 yards from anyone on the beach or in the water between the hours of 9 AM and 6 PM.  After the sun goes down and the sunscreen is put away, during the summer months, Ocean City’s beaches offer free family activities six nights a week, including concerts, bonfires, movies, and a beach Olympics.

Lodging—In Ocean City, there are major hotel chains, quaint bed-and-breakfasts, high-rise suites, spacious summer rentals, and even campgrounds.  If your family prefers the amenities of a hotel, there are 10,000 rooms to choose from in town.  There are also 21,000 condominium units available so visitors can get comfortable in a setting that feels like home.  With so many different options, every type of budget can be accommodated.

The Boardwalk- The Travel Channel called the Ocean City classic wooden boardwalk one of America’s best and USA Today named it one of the nation’s “Top 10 Great Boardwalks.” The famous boardwalk is a little less than three miles long and provides numerous activities for visitors, including family bike rides, long walks, or a relaxing tram ride.  In the evenings, the boardwalk transforms into a nightly hot spot with rides, arcades, and performers.  The boardwalk also features many prominent businesses, including Fisher’s Caramel Popcorn, Thrashers French Fries, Dolle’s Salt Water Taffy, and Dumser’s Dairyland.  While enjoying the sights and sounds on the boardwalk, don’t forget to have some famous Maryland crab cakes, too.  For those who like to experience thrills and chills, the Boardwalk has two amusement parks, Trimpers Rides and The Pier, which was recently renamed Jolly Roger at The Pier, after its sister uptown local amusement park. If you like to shop, be sure to check out Somerset Plaza which features lots of stores, plus free Internet access for everyone.  A unique attraction is the Ocean City-Life Saving Station Museum. Your family can relive the adventures of the U.S. Life Saving Service, a predecessor of today’s Coast Guard.  The Aquarium Room features huge saltwater tanks with a display of amazing fish and sea creatures.  If you are traveling with children, this is one activity not to be missed.

Fishing–Ocean City has a long history of fishing, both commercial and recreational. The town bills itself as the “White Marlin Capital of the World.”  During the summer, numerous charter and private boats fish for billfish, tuna, wahoo, and other game fish. The resort community offers hundreds of square miles of opportunity for anglers of all ages and skill levels. However, a fishing license is required.  If you don’t have a boat, sign up to go out on the water for a few hours on a “head boat.”  These boats charge individuals per head.  There are many of them across the beach town, but it’s wise to call ahead to reserve your place.  If you don’t want to spend a day on the open water, pick a spot on a bridge, beach or pier. The Route 50 Bridge is a popular place to fish.  Fishing rods and equipment can be rented from area bait and tackle shops.  In early August, one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world, the White Marlin Open is held.  Spectators are welcome and the weigh-ins are free, public events.  Take advantage of the abundance of opportunity to teach your kids to fish or crab at one of the free piers and fishing areas on the bay.  Or check out deep sea fishing excursions or stay close to shore on a bayside headboat.

Free Family Fun- If your kids are fans of Radio Disney, carve out some time to hear a special concert presented by Radio Disney AM640.  The “Sizzlin’ Summer of Stars” will feature live performances by some of Radio Disney’s most popular stars including Tiffany Thornton and The Ready Set.  “Sundaes in the Parkcombines a free concert with ice cream for a small fee at Northside Park, 127th Street (bayside) Sundays from 6 to 8 PM. Sunset Park is located along South Philadelphia Avenue on thebay. The event begins at 7 PM and runs to 9 PM. Admission to the park is free, while beverages, including beer, are available for purchase.  It’s important to remember to bring your own seating for the event.

Bases are available for an additional $5.  If volleyball is more your family’s speed, equipment bags contain one net and two balls (standards are not included). Tot lots, a fishing lagoon and walking/jogging paths are also available.  The Ocean Bowl Skate Park on 3rd Street boasts a pool bowl, vertical ramp, mini ramp and concrete street area – perfect for skateboarders and inline skaters.  The Ocean City Tennis Center at 61st Street (bayside) serves up Premier courts, Lee Fast-Dry Clay courts – and two pee-wee courts for players age 8 and under. The Tennis Center also offers junior camps in the summer.  Of course, there are plenty of playgrounds to keep the kids.  They are conveniently located throughout town.  Even pets can get in on the action.  Animals are allowed on the beach or boardwalk at any time between October 1st and April 30th. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and the owner or handler is responsible for removing any waste.  Believe it or not, there’s even a special “Dog Playground” which is available at 94th Street (bayside). For park hours and information about purchasing an access pass, call OC Recreation and Parks at (410) 250-0125. Weekly and annual passes are available. Please note that all dogs must have a valid license and a current rabies vaccination certificate from a certified veterinarian.

Explore NatureThere’s more to Ocean City, Maryland than just the beautiful beaches.  For those who are nature enthusiasts, there is plenty to see and observe throughout the town.  Bring your camera to snap a few pictures of wild birds flying throughout the sky, or spend some time at Assateague Island where wild horses run free.  The ocean waters provide many opportunities to enjoy nature, too.  Take a boat tour and see how the dolphins and whales swim just a short distance from offshore.  Another option is to enjoy birding and nature walks which are offered year-round at Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum, in Snow Hill. Call 410-632-2032 for more information. Delmarva Birding Weekend takes place the last weekend in April. Call for your free bird guide and checklist at 800-852-0335.  If you would like to enjoy the sights and sound of Ocean City at your own pace, take a bike ride.  Ask for a special trail map which details hundreds of bike rides throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.  One ride not to be missed is the Viewtrail 100, a 100-mile circular loop through rural Worcester County, or the Great Delmarva Bicycling Trail. To order, call 800-852-0335, or visit visitworcester.org.  For those who enjoy walking, there are hiking trails in the Pocomoke River State Forest and Park.  Some trails offer access for the disabled. For details and a complete listing, call 800-852-0335.

Dining- If your family likes to dine out and enjoy scrumptious cuisine, you have selected the right place to vacation.  There are plenty of different restaurants to choose from throughout the resort town.  Make sure to have some of the regional specialties such as world-renowned Chesapeake Bay crab cakes and fresh seafood caught just offshore. Or if you prefer, enjoy some Eastern Shore fried chicken, succulent smoked ham or smoky ribs dripping with sauce.  A visit to the boardwalk features classic boardwalk fare such as: pizza and pit beef, burgers, wraps, fries, ice cream, salt-water taffy, and chocolate fudge.  There are also plenty of places to get fresh produce which is picked directly from local farms.  Enjoy tomatoes, sweet corn, and juicy peaches with any of your meals.   After dinner, spend a few hours playing games on the boardwalk or taking a spin on the carousel.  If you enjoy listening to live music, there is a nightspot to match everyone’s interest level.  Nightclubs and pubs throughout Ocean City feature different types of music including: rock, reggae, blues, or cool jazz.

Events---In addition to all of the normal attractions throughout town, there are also special events held at various times.  Some of these include: Springfest, festivals, free concerts and movies on the beach, fireworks on the Fourth of July, the Ocean City Airshow, and the multi-million dollar White Marlin Open.

Planning your tripThere are many ways to help organize your Ocean City information and get all of the latest news and events.  Of course, the website ococean.com is a great place to start.  If you want to shave a few bucks off of your trip, there is even a special section dedicated to discounts and deals.  “Rodney-Ocean City’s Favorite Lifeguard,” will assist you in your search to plan a financially feasible getaway for your family.  Rodney will help you find special discounts on accommodations, dining and nightlife, things to do, golf, and other activities in Ocean City.  For example, throughout the summer, the Dunes Manor Hotel will offer a special deal of 25% off room rates if Friday and Saturday nights are also booked.  In addition, you can sign up for email alerts and news which will be delivered directly to your inbox or speak to an OC insider through the help of the website.  It’s even possible to get information about Ocean City on your smartphone.  Download the only official OC app, which is now available for Droid.  Through this application, you can find discounts on accommodations and restaurants and free entertainment.  Or you can simply call the number, 1-800-OC-OCEAN for more information or to receive a visitor’s guide which will be delivered to your doorstep.

December Editor’s Note

It is that special time of year for our children. There is no better feeling than your child running into your room screaming, “Get up, get up. He was here last night and he left all these presents. Come on get up, you need to come downstairs!” When you see your child’s excitement it gives you a special feeling; it is experience that makes you feel that all your time and energy was worth it.

I would like you to take as many pictures as possible this holiday season. These are precious moments that need to be captured on a digital camera. I know sometimes it is a pain to frame the moment, but it will be worth it when the holidays are long gone and you can sit by the fire enjoying a glass of red wine reminiscing over your photos and the special moments that were created.

I was listening to the radio, and the host was commenting on the most requested gift for 7-12 year olds this upcoming holiday season. The number one request is the ipad. I wonder if this gift is something that I should get Dak this year. I would like to keep Dak as young as I can for as long as I can, but society’s pressure almost makes this impossible. Just watch one episode of iCarly and you can hear and see all the adult overtones in this Nickelodeon theme show aimed at the children watching it.  If I get Dak an ipad, will it make him grow up any faster? I don’t know. The next generation will be more tech savvy than our generation and maybe this laptop will help Dak’s ability to learn; children are hardwired  for touch interfaces. I also like the fact that Dak will have to interact with the ipad instead of just watching TV shows. I have a feeling that much of our children’s future learning will be on touch devices. I know it is a hefty cost to shell out $500.  Furthermore, my son might not be responsible enough to take care of such an expensive device. I will let you know what decision that I make. It is never easy being a parent.

Words With The Master Kum Sung

The benefits of participating in the martial arts include developing discipline and coordination, improving one’s self-esteem, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  The martial arts are not meant to be violent or to purposely inflict bodily harm upon others.  Although they may be portrayed this way in movies and on television, Dr. Kum Sung, of Kum Sung Martial Arts in Toms River, feels this is not an accurate depiction of martial arts.  He strongly believes that the mass media is severely tarnishing the martial arts’ image.

“It is not meant to hurt or disrespect others, but because of the media, martial arts is being taught as a way to fight,” says Dr. Sung who has studied a variety of martial arts forms ranging from Chinese to Japanese style for over 50 years.  “I have been involved with martial arts all my life and never thought it would be so misunderstood.   For years, Asians have been using martial arts as a way to improve one’s health.  Practicing martial arts prevents physical injuries and can help children who may lack focus.  I teach traditional martial arts which is different than today’s modern martial arts.  The main purpose of traditional martial arts is to promote a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally.  Martial arts can also help prevent injuries and helps to preserve balance and coordination.  In contrast, modern martial arts is very dangerous and violent and is being glorified in the entertainment industry.  Young people are attracted to the violence, but this is wrong.  People don’t understand martial arts because they think it is television entertainment wrestling.  Then, the kids see that type of behavior and want to imitate it by choking each other out which can cause death.”

While the media has played a significant role in the misunderstanding of the sport, a lack of qualified instructors is also part of the problem.  Dr. Sung feels that today’s martial arts teachers do not have the experience and necessary certification to understand and teach the true meaning of the sport.

“Instructors always had to be a high black belt, but now it seems that anyone can open a martial arts school without the proper qualifications,” says Dr. Sung who majored in child psychology and is the highest Martial Arts Grandmaster in the area with over 47 years of experience.  “In order to be a respected martial arts instructor, you need to have a certain degree of education and training.  Many instructors are not properly qualified to teach martial arts today.  I was once proud to say that I teach martial arts, but now I am embarrassed by the way martial arts is being taught.  It is very frustrating for me.  I have grown up with this sport and I am extremely upset about how it is changing.  Modern martial arts is more harmful than beneficial.”
Though Dr. Sung can’t personally alter the image of martial arts throughout the country or monitor the way it is being taught, he is doing his best to preserve traditional martial arts.   The Master Kum Sung Martial Arts System is a balanced system of traditional martial arts blended with modern techniques, ancient philosophies, and modern psychology.   A strong emphasis is placed on positive thinking.  Students in the Kum Sung program are encouraged to do their very best, to see rewards in life, and to overcome negative thoughts and actions.   Designed to accommodate students of all levels and ages, this unique system emphasizes self-defense, positive-reinforcement psychology, physical fitness, and coordination.   Dr. Sung strongly believes that students of the Master Kum Sung Martial Arts System will develop not only into well-rounded martial artists, but secure, positive, self-confident, and emotionally and physically fit people.

Traditional martial arts offer many benefits, but the sport has seen a decrease in participants during recent years.  Dr. Sung directly attributes this to a slow economy.  During difficult financial times, families can be quick to omit certain activities from their children’s schedules.  Dr.  Sung firmly believes that this is detrimental to the kids.

“During this tough economy, parents tend to cut back on their children’s activities,” says Dr. Sung, who has instructed police academies, special law enforcement and military agencies, national martial arts champions and many recognizable martial artists. “But this is the wrong thing to do.  If they are home after school with nothing to do, they are more likely to get into mischief and then imitate the violence they see on television.  They definitely need an organized and structured activity.  I feel so strongly about this that I decided to bring my prices down to what they were thirty years ago.  This way, parents don’t have to cut back and take away the things that the kids enjoy.”

What sets Kum Sung apart from other martial arts studios is that the instructors genuinely care about the students’ mental health.  Once parents decide to enroll their children in a martial arts program, Dr. Sung says there are many benefits.   In addition to improving a child’s physical health, Dr. Sung says the instructors work to support the children in creating a positive way of thinking.

“So many parents are working full-time today, and are not home during the after-school hours,” says Dr. Sung, who has been featured on the cover of many national and international Martial Art magazines and has been the subject of several award winning photographs at national exhibitions.  “When the children are home alone, there is no social communication with the child.  The child needs to have constant attention and someone needs to be aware of their behavior.  We are able to provide that for the children.  We are educating them emotionally.  With this type of background, they will then have the confidence to become healthy and successful adults.”

During class sessions, children are also encouraged to talk about whatever is on their minds.  Kum Sung believes in open communication and wants children to feel comfortable opening up to the instructors about whatever may be bothering them.

“Every class has time allowed for kids to discuss their feelings and what they like or don’t like,” says Dr. Sung who is certified by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, which determines Olympic eligibility in the United States.  “We have one-on-one relationships with all of the children.  We also help children who may be experiencing behavior problems and are out of control with their parents or at school.  Some of the children battle with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), so we get a lot of referrals from doctors who are looking to us as a way to help the children gain some control and focus.”

In the children’s classes, maintaining focus and learning discipline are two of the major skills which are addressed.  Instructors will also teach balance, coordination, self-esteem, goal-setting, memory improvement, self-defense, and concentration.  In addition, students are taught self-defense with control, not aggression, which is a key factor.  They are also taught stranger awareness as well as rolling which helps prevent sprains and broken bones.  While many martial arts schools just teach a basic way of doing a technique, Kum Sung teaches with more attention to detail for maximum effectiveness and safety.  They also constantly refine and improve on students’ techniques.   Most importantly, all classes are taught in a fun and positive environment.  During report card time, Dr. Sung asks all of his students to bring in their report cards so that he can monitor their academic accomplishments as well.

The teenage classes, for students between ages 12 and 18, emphasize self-discipline and self-respect both for themselves and for others.  The students learn how to relieve stress which is a great defense mechanism during the tumultuous teenage years.  Good habits are strongly encouraged in a nurturing and positive environment.  At this age, there is an emphasis on speed, grace, and strength.  Students are also taught self-awareness, healing, and meditation.

Adult classes differ greatly from all other age categories. Although everyone in the group is taught the same kicks, punches, weapons and forms, they are taught in a manner that will best benefit the individual. Kum Sung’s adult programs are designed to fit a student’s individual needs, interests, and health.  Adult classes specialize in: exercises for the body and mind, inner peace and harmony, the Asian culture and language, philosophy, and weight control.  The instructors at Kum Sung carefully monitor these classes to ensure that adult participants do not suffer any unnecessary injuries causing lost time from work.  The purpose of the classes is to allow adults an opportunity to improve their physical and mental well-being, and to make their health a priority, which may not have been possible earlier in their lives.

Kum Sung has various locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties.  Kum Sung Headquarters are located on Hooper Avenue in Toms River.  The facility includes an 8,000 square foot Martial Arts Center, which has more than 600 members, and a 16,000 square foot complete Fitness Center, which has more than 3,000 members.  There are also facilities in Brick, Manahawkin, Long Branch, Howell, Lanoka Harbor, and Middletown. Their comprehensive website, kumsungkarate.com, includes information about future events, martial arts instructors, birthday parties, special offers, and Kum Sung’s summer camp.  Your family can also make an appointment online to take a tour of one of the facilities and to meet the instructors in person.  The website also offers videos of martial arts classes online and many photographs of students in action.

Despite hearing conflicting opinions about traditional versus modern martial arts, Dr. Sung feels confident and proud of the school he has maintained for over thirty years.  Kum Sung Martial Arts has built a reputation from decades of listening to the public’s requests and helping people achieve new levels of confidence and capability.  He knows that he is providing his students with a positive, traditional martial arts education.  When you consider that Dr. Sung has now been teaching three generations of students, it is obvious that the families he serves truly respect his work.

“I have had some people come up to me and say, ‘When I was a child, I learned from you.  Then, I brought my children, and now I’m bringing my grandkids to you,’” says Dr. Sung.  “That is a very rewarding feeling.”

Kum Sung Martial Arts is much more than just punching and kicking.  It is a system that helps build confidence, coordination, and inner peace and opens up the door to a positive attitude.   The overall theme of Kum Sung Martial Arts is to provide children with a proper education.  In addition to martial arts, the family also runs Sung Star Academy which is for children ages six weeks to five-years-old.  There are state certified teachers in every classroom with registered nurses on staff to take care of your little ones, if necessary.  The directors of the school all have the highest degrees of education.  If you are interested in learning more about Kum Sung Karate, call 732-341-8800, or visit their website at kumsungkarate.com.  You can even send your questions via email at info@kumsungkarate.com.

Focus On The Family-The Chandler’s

Penny and Bill Chandler and their children are living their own real-life fairy tale.  It all started in a land not so very far away (Brick Township), and not so very long ago (the Spring of 2000), when Penny was swept away by her knight in shining armor, although he was driving a dump truck rather than a white horse. Penny’s father, the late Roy Wyckoff, needed some stone for a project at his home, and placed an order with Chandler’s Excavating, the gravel company owned by Bill’s father.  Bill, ten years Penny’s junior, had caught a glimpse of Penny some three years earlier, riding on the back of a Harley Davidson on Mantoloking Road, the street on which they had both grown up, and was smitten.  Prepped with a dashing new haircut, Bill set out to deliver the stone, and left with the promise of a date with his future queen.  At their wedding in July 2003, Penny arrived not in a pumpkin coach, but on the back of a dump truck, to meet her Prince Charming for their nuptials at the Riverfront Gazebo in Beachwood. They were blessed with four little princesses ~ identical twins, Larissa and Ashley, in 2004, Caitlyn in 2006, and Cynthia in 2008.  The youngest even has a fairy tale nickname, as her sisters call her “Rella” after Cinderella.  They settled in a cottage near the woods of Brick and are all living happily ever after.  “I know it may sound corny, but we are living our dreams come true,” quips Penny.  “We may not have a castle, and it’s a tight squeeze in our house, but we have lots of room for love.”

Bill works as a civil engineer for Manchester Township and also serves on the Board of Adjustment for their home town of Brick, where he enjoys applying his professional knowledge to land use decisions in the town.  Penny has been a stay-at-home mother since their third baby arrived, and keeps her foot in the professional door as a per diem fitness specialist for her former full-time employer, Meridian Health, but she notes, “my hours are few and far between!”  Penny has recently begun to utilize her background in exercise and nutrition in her new venture as a private personal trainer.  Penny’s mother and step-father, Kathleen and Jim Curran, moved to Florida last spring, from their home in Brick, but Bill’s folks, Bill and Carol Chandler, still live in the Mantoloking Road home in which Bill and his siblings were raised.  The Chandlers also have a wide circle of friends, local families with children of similar ages to their own daughters, with whom they regularly socialize. “There are so many kids that when we get together for play-dates, it looks like a giant birthday party,” Penny notes.  While Penny says that her girls love to play with other kids, she is thrilled that her daughters are so close and enjoy each other’s company the best, which she refers to as the “power of sisterhood.”  Rounding out the family are Maggie, an 11-year-old Greater Swiss Mountain dog, and their puppy, one-year-old Beauty, an English springer spaniel.

YCT: Tell us a little about your family and the personalities of each of your children.

Penny:  Our oldest daughter, Larissa, is almost six and takes after her father.  She is very detailed and systematic and is my “mother hen.”  Her twin, Ashley, is our personal dance and parade choreographer around the house.  Caitlyn will turn four this month and being the middle child, she loves the spotlight.  Our two-year-old, Cindy, is very independent.  Since the oldest three girls all share a birthday month, we usually have a gigantic party with lots of autumn and Halloween decorations and activities.  We really go all out!

YCT: What is a typical day like in your home?

Penny:   The coffee pot button is pushed on, the dog and puppy go outside and depending on who is awake, everyone remains relatively quiet until I get up, because I am not a morning mom!  I always fix Caitlyn and Cindy’s hair before breakfast, otherwise they end up with it in their mouths – yuck! After breakfast, the older two girls head off to Kindergarten during the week, and Cindy and I take Caitlyn to preschool three days a week.  After school, once everyone is home again, we take the girls to their activities.  Then at 7:00pm we eat, read and sleep – hooray!  Weekends are always easily filled with “catch-up” stuff, parties and church every Sunday.  We really love our church, Brick Presbyterian on Drum Point Road, where Bill serves as an elder.  I sometimes help out in the babysitting room and the girls attend Sunday School.

YCT:  What activities do your children participate in after school?

Penny:  Larissa and Ashley have attended gymnastics at Twisters in Lakewood for the last two years and have recently joined the Northeast Elite Gymnastics Team, which will compete all over the country.  All four girls attend  dance school.  This is the fourth year for the older girls.  They take ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop, and are also members of a competition dance team.  Their first competition will be in Somerset, NJ, in November.

YCT: What is your favorite thing to do locally with your family?

Penny: We always attend Your Child Today’s Family Expo in the spring.  The girls love to get their faces painted and watch the great entertainment there.  We also love to participate in Jenkinson’s Easter Parade and the Baby Parade in August.  We build a float and configure costumes and enter all the contests.  We have been lucky to win prizes in several categories, including “Best Dressed”, “Twins”, “Best Float” and “Funniest”.  I also belong to a support group called Jersey Shore Mothers of Multiples (JSMOM).  I joined when the twins were two and we enjoy the outings they coordinate, as well as several theme parties they offer each year.

YCT:  Do you have any favorite local vacation spots?

Penny:  Since our girls are still so little, we try to stay fairly local for vacations.  Once or twice a year, we’ll head down to Harrah’s in Atlantic City.  The girls are enthralled by all the lights and sounds as we walk through the casino, and they love the pool and boardwalk.  We have also gone camping at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Campground in Elmer, NJ.  They have nice cabins available for rent so we don’t have to rough it in a tent, and offer theme weekends with lots of activities for the kids.

YCT:  Have you ever gone on vacation without the kids?

Penny:  We have gone to Atlantic City for one or two nights and last year we went to the White Sands in Point Pleasant Beach because we won the stay as a prize in the Jenkinson’s Parade!

YCT:  Do you have a favorite family-friendly restaurant?

Penny:  Bill and I really enjoy taking the girls to Craig’s Restaurant in Brick for brunch after church on Sunday every couple of months.  For a special treat, we will have hibachi-style dinner at Ikko Restaurant in Brick.  But our favorite is cheese steak hoagies from Pat’s Pizza in Point Pleasant.

YCT:  What is your favorite date night location and how often do you get to go out with just your husband?

Penny:  We don’t go out too often because our girls are so little and we are really just coming out of the baby stage.  We are happy to stay at home together.  The girls play in their new playhouse in the yard and we sit on the porch and chat.  When my mother is in town, we take advantage and sneak in a quick dinner out for just the two of us.

YCT:  What is your favorite non-mommy thing to do and how often do you get to do it?

Penny:  I love going to my gym in Brick.  I take Zumba classes there twice a week and I absolutely love it. The Friday night class sets my mood to happy for the whole weekend.  I also love attending gift auctions with my girlfriends, or any kind of spa service.  For the last four years, I have been a member of a Christian-based support group called Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) and I go to their monthly meetings. Those ladies are so kind and have taught me the tradition of bringing prepared meals to friends when they have a new baby in the house, which is always so appreciated!

YCT:  What is your husband’s favorite non-daddy thing to do?

Penny: Bill loves serving on the Board of Adjustment (BOA) and attending the meetings.  He also belongs to the Pinelands Antique Engine Association, but they meet the same night as the BOA so he contributes by serving as their webmaster and historian.

YCT:  Do you patronize any advertisers from our magazine?

Penny:  The girls and I love to go to Sparkle Diva for a fun girls-only activity and had a lot of fun when we went to Pirate Adventure.  We regularly go to Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach and the Casino Pier in Seaside.  Breakwater Beach in Seaside is made affordable to us by purchasing tickets during Easter weekend or Slider’s birthday in July when tickets are Buy One/Get One Free!

YCT:  Do you have any parenting advice that you would like to offer our readers?

Penny:  My best advice would be to follow through on what you tell your children and don’t back yourself into a corner when it comes to discipline.  My husband would like to add that after discipline happens, always follow-up with a hug and kiss afterwards, and remind them why they were disciplined.

YCT:  What is your favorite part of Your Child Today magazine?

Penny:  I really do enjoy the entire magazine, but when I first began to read it three years ago, I would go right to the Calendar of Events to see what I could bring the children to locally.  Now I read every page online.  I also really enjoy the photo contests!

About The Cover-November 2010

Taking Halloween pictures in September always reminds me how fast the weeks go by.  I feel like I was on the beach yesterday but now I’mbehind becauseIdon’t know what my kids are going to be for Halloween!  Well Penny, the mom of our models, was sure on the ball with costumes for her girls Ashley, Larissa, Caitlyn and Cindy.  They were all so good for our shoot.  Thanks!

Although the temperatures are dropping and the days are getting shorter, I’m still out on-location shooting!  There is still time for portraits at the beach, or wait and take advantage of fall foliage which peaks in late October and early November.  The vibrant colors serve as an awesome backdrop for family photos.  We can turn any of those images into a wonderful holiday greeting card to send out this season.  I have many designs and styles to choose from!  And remember, portraits make GREAT gifts for the holidays.

My job as a portrait photographer is so rewarding and fun.  It is wonderful to be able to do what you love and have others love what you do! While we all lead busy lives, I feel it is vital that we take the time to preserve memories and celebrate the love of family.  I really hope to hear from you while the weather is still nice as I love to shoot on location as long as possible.

September Editor’s Note

As a parent there are always tough decisions to make. I remember taking my son to The Land of Make Believe when he was 4. There was a roller coaster especially designed for children under 6. It had two inclines and drops that were about 10 feet high. My wife had the pleasure of riding with Dak while I got an opportunity to take pictures of his first roller coaster ride. He was so excited, but that excitement quickly abated. As the roller coaster started, my son started to cry.  Those cries slowly escalated to screaming “I want to get off, I want to get off!!” My wife and I felt horrible that we pushed him into something that he was not prepared for.  How could we have known?  His cousins loved the ride. We thought we might have scarred him for life and that he would be a teenager before he gets on to another roller coaster.

We are now 3 years removed from that experience. We have taken several trips to Water Park Slides, Jenkinson’s amusement rides and there has been no sign of that awful moment that we experienced when Dak was four. Dak was getting more confident with each ride that he conquered.

So, we decided to take a trip with his cousins and his aunt to Great Adventure. We were having a great day going on all the smaller rides. I said to him “Dak, do you want to go on Rolling Thunder?” He replied with “I don’t know Dad, do you think that I will be scared?” I said with confidence, “ No, you wont be scared, it is one of the slower roller coasters in the park.” “ Okay” he said.

We waited in line and when we were next to ride the roller coaster  Dak said, “ Dad, I don’t want to go on, I will be very scared.” “No, Dak you will be fine, it is not scary and I will be right next to you to make sure nothing happens to you.” I wondered if I was being truly honest with my son. Why push him if he is not ready for this experience. It was now too late, we were taking off. Dak gripped my hand as tight as I ever felt. He put his head down and closed his eyes the whole time. He was not crying, but you could tell that he was not enjoying the experience. As we exited the ride I asked Dak if he was scared. He said, “No that was awesome, it was my favorite ride of the day.”

Your Guide To Local Dance & Gymnastics

Your children have graduated from toddlerhood and are now of the age to take either dance or gymnastics lessons.  Of course, they seem very excited to wear pretty pink tutus and form-fitting leotards, but how do you know for sure that these activities will benefit your kids?   Enrolling in one of these schools is a huge commitment of your time as weekly classes are usually required from September through June.  And, it has to be financially feasible for your family since all schools require registration fees, monthly payments, and additional costs for shows or recitals.  However, if your child has a sincere interest in one of these activities and you can manage the money and get your child there every week, area parents and school directors say signing up for dance or gymnastics lessons is worth every penny and the time spent in the car shuttling the kids to and from lessons.

Chrissy Starr, owner of Shore Ballet in Toms River, says studying ballet can provide your children with an invaluable experience.

“All kids gain from the arts,” says Starr.  “It teaches them discipline and exposes them to music.  Everyone is fitness consciousness these days.  The kids are engaging in an activity and not just watching television.”

Brick mother Penny Chandler has all of her daughters involved in either dance or gymnastics lessons.  She strongly believes that these activities teach the girls worthwhile lessons about the importance of exercise and proper nutrition, too.

“All four of my girls are in dance classes,” says Chandler.   “One daughter is on a dance competition team, one takes ballet, and the twins take ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.   My twins are on the north elite pre-team for USAG at Twisters in Lakewood and my three-year-old takes recreational classes once a week there, too.  These activities really give the girls a great sense of self awareness and a sense of self discipline.  Plus, they talk about healthy eating during their gymnastics work outs.  I’ll never forget the day when my one daughter said, ‘Mommy no more chicken nuggets!  Only baked chicken and vegetables!’  I was very surprised to hear her say this but very happy and pleased that this kind of information was being conveyed to my girls.  The mental concentration is also another way they benefit.  One daughter said to me, “Mom I have to really be careful not to fall off the balance beam.”

Howell mother of two, Colleen Murath decided to enroll her daughter in gymnastics lessons when she was three-years-old.   For the past two years, her daughter has thoroughly enjoyed all of her classes.

“I wanted my daughter to do an activity and get some exercise while also learning some new skills and building her confidence, too,” says Murath.  “Taking gymnastics is a great opportunity for her to meet other girls, so I really appreciate the social aspect of taking gymnastics classes, as well.”

Murath particularly enjoyed the end-of-the-year exhibition which showcased the skills the girls learned during the program.

“I couldn’t get over how much they learned throughout the year,” says Murath.  “All of a sudden, she was flipping over a parallel bar and I didn’t even know she could do that.”

If you feel that your child is ready for this type of challenge, it’s important to research and choose a facility to meet the needs of your individual child.   Therefore, it’s important to choose a school that will successfully educate your child in a specific discipline, but also keep them happy and safe.  When beginning a search, there are a few important factors to consider.

First, spend a lot of time asking questions about the backgrounds of the teaching staff.   Don’t hesitate to meet with the director and ask to see the credentials and the certifications of the teaching staff.  It’s also wise to see if it is clean and safe and make sure the curriculum being offered is something that matches the interests and the abilities your child.

Another factor to consider is class size.   Make sure the classes are not too large so your child doesn’t feel lost in the shuffle.  Be sure to ask about the teacher-student ratio, as well.  Also, chances are your child may get sick at least once during the class, so it’s important to find out if make up classes are offered.

Okay, so you signed your child up for the program, you paid your money and your child already took a few classes.  At first, she couldn’t wait to tell you all of the details about the steps she just learned and the new friends in her class.  But, then she breaks the news to you that she doesn’t want to go anymore.  What now?

Make sure to give your child at least a few months to get acclimated to this new activity.  Talk to her about whatever fears she may have and discuss her concerns with the teaching staff, also.  However, if after a few months, she still does not have any interest in attending the lessons, it may be a good idea to find another activity.

So, if your child seems interested in flipping over bars and doing forward rolls, then maybe gymnastics school is the way to channel her after-school energy.   Or perhaps your child wants to become a real ballerina.  If you’re hesitant about whether or not to sign on the dotted line, don’t be because many children enjoy numerous positive benefits from one of these activities.

Before selecting a program, research the facility online, ask for referrals from other parents and drop in to visit a ballet school or gym without an appointment to see how their classes are run.  They should have a friendly, open-door policy and be able to answer all of your questions in person.  Ask about the instructors, the class sizes, and the cleanliness of the school.  Also ask your child to come with you.  If he or she is welcomed by the staff and feels immediately comfortable, then you just may have found the right place.

Thinking of a fun affordable activity for your child this fall? Then you should consider the Shore Ballet School. Approaching their 34th season, the most recommended dance school in the Toms River area is dedicated to the highest quality of instruction. With a great curriculum arranged specifically for boys and girls of every age group, their programs are rated #1 by parents and students alike.

This season Shore Ballet will be offering a variety of styles such as Tap, Lyrical, Broadway, Hip Hop and Tumbling. In all classes teachers focus on technique, choreography and having fun. Parents love their stellar curriculum, convenient class schedules and reasonable prices. Shore Ballet is known as a non-competitive school. That means, students won’t be asked to sign up for extra practice workshops or dance competitions. At Shore Ballet all the magic happens each week right at the studio!

Chrissy Starr is the owner/director of the school and she is dedicated to making sure the school is a positive place. She is a certified dance instructor and her teacher training began in London, England where she graduated from the prestigious Royal Ballet School.  It was there that she completed a professional dance teacher’s training program that concentrated on the fundamental teaching of classical dance. Upon retuning to the U.S. she continued her studies obtaining more teaching certifications while still performing in ballets and theater productions. Now as a respected member of the Royal Academy of Dance for more than 18 years, Ms. Starr holds the R.A.D. teaching certificate with Distinction. She is also a long time member of the American Academy of Ballet and holds certifications from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.

Dance For Joy, located in Brielle NJ on Route 70, has been a part of the community for twenty one years!  In the Fall of February 2007, Kimberly Kunkel became the new owner and Artistic Director.  Kimberly Kunkel has been dancing since she was three years old. She studied Classical Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Choreography and Yoga. She attended Howell High School’s Fine and Performing Arts Center where she was recognized for her fine tuned dancing and creative choreography. She then went on to pursue her dance training at Montclair State University where she studied Ballet and Modern, and performed professionally with the Sebastian Sextet Dance Company.  Ms. Kunkel finished her studies at Point Park University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, one of the most prestigious institutions for dance in the country.  She graduated with a degree in Dance Pedagogy which included studies in child, adolescent, adult and educational psychology, anatomy, kinesiology, and choreography, along with daily technique classes in Ballet, Modern and Jazz.

Kimberly has an incredible passion for dance, choreography, teaching and most importantly children; “I’ve had so many amazing and inspiring dance teachers in my life thathave left me with a deep understanding of my own body.  This connection is what dance is all about.  The mind and body connection is what makes dance so addicting.  To be able to define and interpret a thought, feeling, song, or even silence with movement, is the most honest form of expression I have ever experienced.  The body becomes our finely tuned instrument, and what other instrument could possibly be so beautiful?  This is what I hope to teach and instill in each student that walks through my studio doors.” ~Kimberly Kunkel

At Dance For Joy we strongly believe that ballet is the seed in which all dance stems from. There is nothing in the world that can teach grace, coordination, poise and balance better, and combine it in a more effective package than ballet.  Students that learn and apply the lessons of ballet, almost subconsciously integrate what they have mastered into their life.  At the very least, one can inexplicably see and sense the increase in confidence and self-esteem that will last them a lifetime.  In a society where kids are growing up with constant instant gratification from all the wonderful technologies our world presents us with, ballet is a way to teach focus and patience with self.  It allows the student to understand their bodies and the technique of dance while instilling perseverance, determination, and discipline.

Dance For Joy offers a variety of dance techniques including Classical Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Yoga.  It is a second home for some of the students attending, and it’s DFJ’s goal to create a safe and friendly atmosphere while inspiring and challenging the students in the art of dance. The studio isn’t just a place where students learn a dance; it is where they learn how to dance. This is what sets Dance for Joy a part from other dance studios.  The End of the Year Show is an option for all students enrolled at DFJ. Show rehearsal is separate from the student’s weekly technique classes, allowing students to take full advantage of their dance training.

All of the faculty at Dance For Joy are highly trained and certified dance teachers who have dedicated most of their lives to the discipline of dance.  Each teacher takes a special pride in passing on their knowledge, experiences and passion for dance to each student at DFJ.

Downtown Dance Academy, located on West Water Street in downtown Toms River, it opened for business in June 2009. Owner and Director Laura Stout is currently preparing for the Academy’s second season.

Laura Stout has been dancing since she was a small child. During her education she studied Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, and Tap. Later, Laura trained at Mason Gross School of the Arts, at Rutgers University, where she studied Modern, Choreography, and Ballet. She has been teaching dance in Monmouth and Ocean Counties for over ten years before establishing Downtown Dance Academy.

Dance has been in Laura’s life for as long as she can remember and wants to spread the joy and passion onto the children she teaches; “I love to watch the students grow into beautiful dancers, see the look in their eyes when they get that step they have been working so hard on, and to witness first hand that I have passed my love of dance onto them.”

All members of the faculty at Downtown Dance Academy are highly skilled in their disciplines and have experience in both performing and teaching dance. The goal of the Downtown Dance Academy is to encourage every child to explore and expand their talent and abilities. The faculty pride themselves on providing each child with a quality dance education, as well as helping to build individual confidence and self discipline in a warm and caring environment.

Downtown Dance Academy offers a variety of dance disciplines including Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Stretch & Strength, and Zumba. The Academy also offers performance and higher education opportunities with the Junior and Senior Dance Troupe.

Aside from the exercise, there are many benefits of dance. Dance is not only an excellent way to build muscle strength, coordination and balance, but it is also a way of building self esteem, listening skills, patience, and the ability to work within a team.

The Academy has many students who spend hours in the studio every week, not only to further their dance education, but also because they just enjoy being there. Downtown Dance Academy staff want every child who walks through the doors to feel safe and comfortable in the studio.

“The bond between dancers is unlike any other and we enjoy watching these bonds grow and mature into lifelong friendships.” – Laura Stout

Protecting Youngsters from Sun’s Damaging Rays

Studies have proven that the sun damage of today may be the skin cancer of tomorrow. Sun burns experienced in childhood have been shown to be one of the most common causes of skin cancer in adults. There are two main reasons this is true: First, children’s skin is more vulnerable to sun damage and secondly, on average people get 80% of their lifetime sun exposure by the time they are 18 years of age.

Severe and frequent sunburns in childhood increase one’s risk of later developing malignant melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer). The less dangerous forms of skin cancer are due to long term, regular sun exposure. Even on cloudy days, 30-50 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can reach us and potentially damage one’s skin.

There are some very simple tips to follow to ensure that children are safeguarded from the sun – while also ensuring that they enjoy the sunny summer months.

*Limit outdoor playtime when the  sun is strongest, usually between 11 am and 3 pm.

*Make maximum use of shade –  whether natural in the form of trees, or make shade with umbrellas, hats and  visors.

*Dress children in long sleeves and  pants whenever possible. Clothing with tightly woven fabric that you can’t see  through typically offers the best sun protection.

*Avoid skimpy clothes sundresses  and sleeveless T-shirts because they leave especially-vulnerably body parts  exposed – shoulders and the back of childrens’ necks. Wide brimmed hats can  also help cover these areas.

*Sunscreen, sunscreen,  sunscreen. Use a moderately strong sunscreen of at least SPF 15 on children,  and reapply often. The sunscreen you choose should have both UVA and UVB  screens and a waterproof sunscreen should be used for swimming and sports.  Please note that sunscreen should not be used on children  under six months of age.

*Sunglasses protect even the  youngest of eyes so ensure that sunglasses have an ultraviolet coating.

In the event that your child does get sunburn, cool the area in tepid water for 30-60 minutes, but don’t let the child get too cold. After-sun products are available to help cool and add moisture back to the skin.  Consult a physician immediately if blisters or a rash appear, or if a child shows other signs of illness along with the sun-burned skin. Always call a doctor if a baby gets sunburn.
