Holiday Happenings In New Jersey

by Trcia Berwick

The holidays are here and it’s time to fill your family’s calendar with lots of fun and festive events here in the New Jersey area.  Look through this list, plan a few outings and get into the holly jolly spirit with your little ones.

1.)   Winnie the Pooh Christmas Carol at Monmouth University—Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. This affordable, family-friendly show is a great way to expose your children to live theatre in an intimate setting.  The Pollak Theatre is not overwhelming in size which makes it the perfect place to bring very small children.  We took our girls when they were two-years-old and they were mesmerized by Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends from the Hundred Acre Woods.  The shows are scheduled to run the first weekend of December.

2.)   Manasquan Chamber of Commerce— All of the holiday events will take place in the business district on Main Street.  Walking through the streets of downtown Manasquan with all of the storefronts decorated for the holidays really gets you into the Christmas spirit.  Of course, it’s not New York City, but it’s a lot closer and less congested, too.  For those with very young children, spending the day in Manasquan during the month of December is a great way to enjoy the season without dealing with large crowds.

3.)   Downtown Red Bank-–There are many holiday happenings to choose from in Reed Bank this year.  If your family enjoys gingerbread houses, take the family for a stroll through the business district for the Red Bank Gingerbread Walk through December 22.  There will be many professionally decorated gingerbread creations in the windows of participating businesses.  The town will also have Classic Horse and Carriage Rides on Saturdays in December.  The rides will be held from 1-5 PM.  Guests can get a ride from the Bridge Avenue location (across from The Galleria) and 26 Broad Street which is outside Murphy Style Grill.  This is a free event.  My husband and daughters took this ride last year and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  We cuddled up underneath a blanket and listened to the holiday tunes as we traveled throughout the streets of Red Bank.  The kids also loved waving to all of the people as they passed by; they thought they were celebrities!  This is one event not to be missed!  Pictures with Santa are also available at The Galleria (2 Bridge Ave.) from 12-4 PM.  For more information, visit www.thegalleriaredbank.com.

4.) Smithville—This charming shopping village is located in the southern part of the state, not far from Atlantic City.  Every weekend in December will feature a Christmas train ride throughout the village, a magical talking tree to delight the children, and story time with Mrs. Claus in her Christmas cottage from 1:30-4:30 PM.  Not to be missed is the “Light Show on the Lake” which will be from 5:30-8:30 PM every Thursday-Sunday through January 2.  100 Christmas trees will magically float on Lake Meone while guests listen to holiday music.  My family usually makes an annual fall trip to Smithville, but this year we are going to take a ride down the parkway during the Christmas season.  We are looking forward to seeing all of the lights floating on the lake.  For more information, visit www.smithvillenj.com.

5.) Allaire Village—Allaire Village will present the classic tale “A Christmas Carol” on December 10 and 17.  There will also be Holiday Lantern Tours held on December 11 and 18.  The popular candlelight tours offer visitors a look at the historic village at night as authentically-clad museum interpreters lead groups through the lantern-lit streets of the village decorated for the Christmas season.  Santa Claus will also be available for train rides on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of December.  Kids and family members can ride the train for $5 which is a great bargain.  The train runs every half hour.  My family and I have taken this Santa train ride the last two years and it was definitely an enjoyable experience for everyone.  What’s great is that Santa really takes the time to speak with each of the children and ask them what they would like for Christmas.  For more information, visit www.allairevillage.org.

6.) Storybook Land—Located in Egg Harbor Township, this amusement park offers lots of rides and attractions.  During the month of December, the park is turned into a winter wonderland with Santa and Mrs. Claus available to meet and greet your little ones.  After the sun sets, the theme of the park is “Fantasy with Lights.”  This beautiful outdoor display is Southern New Jersey’s Christmas tradition.  For more information, visit www.storybookland.com.

7.) Ocean Grove—On December 11, check out the Ocean Grove Victorian Holiday Festival House and Inn Tour.  This is a special two day holiday event of houses and inns around Ocean Grove.  For more information, call 732-774-1391.

8.) Scrooge in Spring Lake—This classic Christmas tale tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge.  The show goes on at The Spring Lake Theatre on Madison Avenue in Spring Lake.  Performances are scheduled for December 11 at 2:00 and 8:00 PM.  For more information, please call 732-449-4530.

9.) First Night in Ocean County at Seaside Heights—Start the new year off right with a big celebration on Friday, December 31 from 12-5 PM.  This is a great way for families to ring in 2011 together in a safe and family-friendly atmosphere.  Local businesses will line the boardwalk with lots of fames, crafts, and activities.  As an added bonus, there will be fireworks at dusk.

Before your holiday calendar fills up, take the time to plan one or two of these activities which may become annual traditions in your family.

Visiting New York During The Holidays

By Tricia Berwick

If you and your family are thinking about visiting New York City this year for the holiday season, there are certain stops along the way that are not to be missed.

1.) The Radio City Christmas Spectacular—For over 75 years, this classic American holiday show has been entertaining audiences in the heart of New York City.  The Christmas show includes the world-famous Radio City Rockettes and a cast and crew of hundreds.  The show features a Living Nativity with live animals, a surprising indoor snowfall, fireworks, and Santa Claus flying high above the audience.  In addition, there is also a 3D movie which is one of the highlights of the Christmas Spectacular.  Santa and the Rockettes take the audience on a thrilling ride visiting New York City landmarks before arriving at Radio City Music Hall to start the show.  The show runs for ninety minutes and does not include an intermission.  The show is so breathtaking that many people never get up from their seats for the entire performance.  If you would like to order tickets for this year’s show which runs through December 30, call the Christmas Spectacular Hotline at 866-858-0007.

2.) St. Patrick’s Cathedral—Located on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in New York City, it is the largest gothic-style Catholic Cathedral in the United States.  As people enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday throughout the streets of New York, some decide to stop in to say a quick Christmas prayer, attend mass, or light a candle.  For over 125 years, the Cathedral of Saint Patrick has provided a beautiful spiritual place for New Yorkers and tourists and visitors.  In fact, over five and a half million visitors come to the St. Patrick’s to worship and pray each year.  If you time and would like to learn more about the church’s origin and history, arrange to schedule a tour before your visit to New York City.  Tours can be conducted by appointment for groups of ten or more, Monday through Friday around the Mass schedule. For more information about St. Patrick’s Cathedral, visit their website at www.saintpatrickscathedral.org.

3.) FAO Schwarz—For almost 150 years, this company has been creating toys to delight children of all ages.  The world-famous FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue store is one of the most famous stores in the world.  During the holiday season, many New Yorkers, and tourists from around the globe, line up to daily to see this children’s wonderland.  Upon entering the store, guests will marvel at the Grand Hall which is which is adorned with more that 20,000 computer-controlled colored lights, a giant dance-on piano keyboard (which was featured in the film “Big” with Tom Hanks), and “FAO Schweetz” which is a classic New York candy shop that features hundreds of sweet treats.  In addition, guests can view “The Muppet WhatNot Workshop” which is only available at FAO Schwarz.  Kids will also love the “Styled by Me Barbie” section, the “Middleton Doll Newborn Nursery,” and the “Madame Alexander Doll Factory.”  For more information about the store, call (212) 644-9400 or visit the store’s website at www.fao.com.
4.) Horse and Carriage Rides in Central Park- These rides can be found al year long lined up along Central Park South between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.  It is a terrific way to relax and see the beauty of Central Park, especially during the holiday season. A standard carriage ride through Central Park costs approximately $50, plus tip forthe first 20 minutes.  If you decide to extend your trip, it will cost $20 more for each additional 10 minutes.  Things seen on the tour include:  The Wollman Rink, Pond, Zoo, Sheep Meadow, Mall (statues), Dairy (tourist information center), the Carousel, and the Dakota (where the former Beatle John Lennon lived).  If you would like to see the sights and sounds throughout Central Park, while snuggling up next to your loved one, this is one activity not to be missed and is certainly a holiday treat.  For more information, visit www.centralpark.com.

5.) Wollman Rink—While in Central Park, lace up someskates and hit the ice at Wollman Rink.  As you are twirling around and practicing a few figure eights, enjoy the beautiful New York City skyline which surrounds the skating rink.  For more information about specific hours and rates, call (212) 439-6900 or visit their website at www.wollmanskatingrink.com.

6.) Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center—The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, which is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, is a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City.  The tree is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire.  Sitting atop the Norway Spruce is a Swarovski crystal star.  The tree has provided Christmas cheer for the people of New York for over 75 years.  The tree is lit daily from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM.   After your family has spent some time gazing at the beautiful Christmas tree, spend some time ice skating at The Ice Skating Rink at Rockefeller Center.  It is truly a magical and memorable experience to skate around the rink while looking up at the majestic tree and the dazzling urban backdrop.   The rink has room for only 150 skaters at a time which makes it an intimate experience.  However, since this is such a popular winter attraction, be prepared to wait awhile before you hit the ice.  If you are interested in ice skating, enter from Fifth Avenue (between 49th and 50th Streets).  For more information, call (212) 332-7654.  Before you leave Rockefeller Center, go underground for a quick bite to eat at The Concourse.  This underground city experience offers shops, fine restaurants, and casual places to get light meals.

7.) Chanukah on Ice at Wollman Rink–Come celebrate the Jewish Festival ofLights on Monday, December 6 from 6-9 PM.  Skate to Jewish music, light a giant ice menorah and have Chanukah treats.  For more information, call (212)-864-5010.

8.) Kwanzaa Events–Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday that has been celebrated since the 1960s from December 26th – January 1st.   On December 26, head to the American Museum of Natural History.  This all-day celebration will honor the seven African-based principles of Kwanzaa with performances of song, dance, and spoken word presented beside an international marketplace.  This year’s event features a traditional “Second Line” parade led by the McCollough Invaders Band; empowering dance performances by Kotchegna Dance Company, Allen Liturgical Dance Ministry, and Gestures Dance Ensemble; and homage to the traditions of African culture performed by the Restoration Dance Theatre Company.  For more information, visit the museum’s website at www.amnh.org.

9.) The New York Botanical Garden—Come check out the Holiday Train Show which is on display through January 9.  Spend time gazing at all of the sights in the illuminated winter wonderland in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.  This show offers visitors a chance to see New York City in a completely different way.  There are 140 NYC landmarks along the tracks, including the original Yankee Stadium.  Take some time to check out Gingerbread Adventures in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.  Everyone will have a chance to learn about the plants that give gingerbread its distinct flavor and smell.  For information about tickets and hours, please visit their website at www.nybg.org.

10.) Holiday Windows–-No trip to New York City during the holiday season would be complete without some time admiring the beautiful windows in some of the city’s most famous stories.  Macy’s Holiday Window Displays always feature scenes from the classis Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street, in addition to other holiday-themed windows.  The Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Window Displays are very popular with children because they are designed around a seasonal book and feature playful animations.  After you have visited the tree at Rockefeller Center, just head across the street to see the sights at Saks Fifth Avenue.  If you find yourself on Madison Avenue, be sure to check out the stylish windows at Barneys New York Holiday Window Displays.  If you have kids in tow, make sure to stop by the windows at Bloomingdales which are always family-friendly and interactive.

11.) Visiting Santa Claus—If you would like your children to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him all of their Christmas wishes, there’s no better place to see the guy in the red suit, than Macy’s Department Store.  Of course, be prepared to wait a little bit on lines as this is one of the most popular places to see Santa in the city.  In addition to having your child’s picture taken with Santa, your little one can visit Santaland.  While your child is waiting on line to get a picture taken, he or she will love looking at all of the dancing bears, lights, and animated displays.  After a stroll through Santaland, your child has a chance to talk to the big guy himself in his very own cottage.  You can enter Macy’s on 34th Street at either Broadway or 7th Avenue.  For more information, visit their website at www.macys.com.

Most parents enjoy the down time, and try to relax after finally having a little break from the busy school week schedule. On the other hand kids are always looking for something exciting to do. With the weather changing at a fast pace in New Jersey outdoor activities like going to the park become a thing of the past. When looking for a different activity where you could spend time with your kids, and stay warm bring your family to Color Me Mine, a paint-your-own ceramics studio in Toms River.  Color Me Mine welcomes all ages, and gives you the ability to do a family activity all while being creative. It’s a way for your children to express their imagination, and have fun doing it. This month’s feature activity is a Thanksgiving platter. The original creation can be used for the turkey holiday in a few weeks and then will become a treasured tradition in your family.

On November 19th at 6:00 pm, Color Me Mine will have a children’s turkey handprint plate painting party.  The studio’s friendly staff will help each child create their handprint to resemble little turkeys. All children must sign up for the event which costs $20 per child. There are only 30 spots available, so it’s a good idea to call the studio early to reserve your spots.

While family members create a wonderful keepsake for the holiday, Color Me Mine owner Irene says they’re also, enjoying spending time together, laughing, and creating memories. It’s a time to be creative, and relax.

“Creating a Thanksgiving platter together as a family will become a cherished memory,” says Irene. “Families can come to the studio and enjoy themselves. They can be relived from their usual hectic schedules, and express their inner creativity.”

“From experience people usually find that creating a piece seems intimidating, but there’s no need to worry about that ,” says Irene. With our staff who are always eager to help, and the tools we provide anyone can create a work of art in no time.

“What everyone needs to be aware of is that Color Me Mine is a place where everyone can get involved and have fun,” says Irene. “Most people don’t consider themselves artistic, and sometimes have a hard time coming up with an idea for their piece. We’ve got that covered with stencils, stamps, and plenty of ideas from our staff.”

Customers are more than welcome to bring items from home to help with the creative process. Customers come in all the time wanting to create a beautiful piece, but seem to be stumped on how to make that happen. “That’s where my staff comes in.” says Irene. The staff takes time to discuss what the customer is looking to create, and then helps with every step along the way to make sure the customer is happy. “Sometimes all it takes is a good idea from the staff, and the customer can add to the idea to make it personal,” says Irene.

“When doing an activity parents are always concerned when it comes to their children’s clothes, but there’s no need to worry about attire at Color Me Mine,” says Irene. All paints are washable, non-toxic and lead-free, so parents don’t have to be concerned about the kids inhaling harmful fumes. Color Me Mine’s paints and glazes are completely 100% friendly to the environment.

Color Me Mine isn’t only for the holidays. It’s a fun activity to do with your children any time of the year. You can come in and let your child create a piece to display in their room, or even a special gift for a loved one. A handmade gift from your child is always a great idea. Especially when your shopping for a person who is hard to buy for. Your Guide To Local Dance & Gymnastics

Your children have graduated from toddlerhood and are now of the age to take either dance or gymnastics lessons.  Of course, they seem very excited to wear pretty pink tutus and form-fitting leotards, but how do you know for sure that these activities will benefit your kids?   Enrolling in one of these schools is a huge commitment of your time as weekly classes are usually required from September through June.  And, it has to be financially feasible for your family since all schools require registration fees, monthly payments, and additional costs for shows or recitals.  However, if your child has a sincere interest in one of these activities and you can manage the money and get your child there every week, area parents and school directors say signing up for dance or gymnastics lessons is worth every penny and the time spent in the car shuttling the kids to and from lessons.

Chrissy Starr, owner of Shore Ballet in Toms River, says studying ballet can provide your children with an invaluable experience.

“All kids gain from the arts,” says Starr.  “It teaches them discipline and exposes them to music.  Everyone is fitness consciousness these days.  The kids are engaging in an activity and not just watching television.”

Brick mother Penny Chandler has all of her daughters involved in either dance or gymnastics lessons.  She strongly believes that these activities teach the girls worthwhile lessons about the importance of exercise and proper nutrition, too.

“All four of my girls are in dance classes,” says Chandler.   “One daughter is on a dance competition team, one takes ballet, and the twins take ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.   My twins are on the north elite pre-team for USAG at Twisters in Lakewood and my three-year-old takes recreational classes once a week there, too.  These activities really give the girls a great sense of self awareness and a sense of self discipline.  Plus, they talk about healthy eating during their gymnastics work outs.  I’ll never forget the day when my one daughter said, ‘Mommy no more chicken nuggets!  Only baked chicken and vegetables!’  I was very surprised to hear her say this but very happy and pleased that this kind of information was being conveyed to my girls.  The mental concentration is also another way they benefit.  One daughter said to me, “Mom I have to really be careful not to fall off the balance beam.”

Howell mother of two, Colleen Murath decided to enroll her daughter in gymnastics lessons when she was three-years-old.   For the past two years, her daughter has thoroughly enjoyed all of her classes.

“I wanted my daughter to do an activity and get some exercise while also learning some new skills and building her confidence, too,” says Murath.  “Taking gymnastics is a great opportunity for her to meet other girls, so I really appreciate the social aspect of taking gymnastics classes, as well.”

Murath particularly enjoyed the end-of-the-year exhibition which showcased the skills the girls learned during the program.

“I couldn’t get over how much they learned throughout the year,” says Murath.  “All of a sudden, she was flipping over a parallel bar and I didn’t even know she could do that.”

If you feel that your child is ready for this type of challenge, it’s important to research and choose a facility to meet the needs of your individual child.   Therefore, it’s important to choose a school that will successfully educate your child in a specific discipline, but also keep them happy and safe.  When beginning a search, there are a few important factors to consider.

First, spend a lot of time asking questions about the backgrounds of the teaching staff.   Don’t hesitate to meet with the director and ask to see the credentials and the certifications of the teaching staff.  It’s also wise to see if it is clean and safe and make sure the curriculum being offered is something that matches the interests and the abilities your child.

Another factor to consider is class size.   Make sure the classes are not too large so your child doesn’t feel lost in the shuffle.  Be sure to ask about the teacher-student ratio, as well.  Also, chances are your child may get sick at least once during the class, so it’s important to find out if make up classes are offered.

Okay, so you signed your child up for the program, you paid your money and your child already took a few classes.  At first, she couldn’t wait to tell you all of the details about the steps she just learned and the new friends in her class.  But, then she breaks the news to you that she doesn’t want to go anymore.  What now?

Make sure to give your child at least a few months to get acclimated to this new activity.  Talk to her about whatever fears she may have and discuss her concerns with the teaching staff, also.  However, if after a few months, she still does not have any interest in attending the lessons, it may be a good idea to find another activity.

So, if your child seems interested in flipping over bars and doing forward rolls, then maybe gymnastics school is the way to channel her after-school energy.   Or perhaps your child wants to become a real ballerina.  If you’re hesitant about whether or not to sign on the dotted line, don’t be because many children enjoy numerous positive benefits from one of these activities.

Before selecting a program, research the facility online, ask for referrals from other parents and drop in to visit a ballet school or gym without an appointment to see how their classes are run.  They should have a friendly, open-door policy and be able to answer all of your questions in person.  Ask about the instructors, the class sizes, and the cleanliness of the school.  Also ask your child to come with you.  If he or she is welcomed by the staff and feels immediately comfortable, then you just may have found the right place.

Thinking of a fun affordable activity for your child this fall? Then you should consider the Shore Ballet School. Approaching their 34th season, the most recommended dance school in the Toms River area is dedicated to the highest quality of instruction. With a great curriculum arranged specifically for boys and girls of every age group, their programs are rated #1 by parents and students alike.

Dance For Joy, located in Brielle NJ on Route 70, has been a part of the community for twenty one years!  In the Fall of February 2007, Kimberly Kunkel became the new owner and Artistic Director.  Kimberly Kunkel has been dancing since she was three years old. She studied Classical Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Choreography and Yoga. She attended Howell High School’s Fine and Performing Arts Center where she was recognized for her fine tuned dancing and creative choreography. She then went on to pursue her dance training at Montclair State University where she studied Ballet and Modern, and performed professionally with the Sebastian Sextet Dance Company.  Ms. Kunkel finished her studies at Point Park University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, one of the most prestigious institutions for dance in the country.  She graduated with a degree in Dance Pedagogy which included studies in child, adolescent, adult and educational psychology, anatomy, kinesiology, and choreography, along with daily technique classes in Ballet, Modern and Jazz.

Kimberly has an incredible passion for dance, choreography, teaching and most importantly children; “I’ve had so many amazing and inspiring dance teachers in my life thathave left me with a deep understanding of my own body.  This connection is what dance is all about.  The mind and body connection is what makes dance so addicting.  To be able to define and interpret a thought, feeling, song, or even silence with movement, is the most honest form of expression I have ever experienced.  The body becomes our finely tuned instrument, and what other instrument could possibly be so beautiful?  This is what I hope to teach and instill in each student that walks through my studio doors.” ~Kimberly Kunkel

At Dance For Joy we strongly believe that ballet is the seed in which all dance stems from. There is nothing in the world that can teach grace, coordination, poise and balance better, and combine it in a more effective package than ballet.  Students that learn and apply the lessons of ballet, almost subconsciously integrate what they have mastered into their life.  At the very least, one can inexplicably see and sense the increase in confidence and self-esteem that will last them a lifetime.  In a society where kids are growing up with constant instant gratification from all the wonderful technologies our world presents us with, ballet is a way to teach focus and patience with self.  It allows the student to understand their bodies and the technique of dance while instilling perseverance, determination, and discipline.

Dance For Joy offers a variety of dance techniques including Classical Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Yoga.  It is a second home for some of the students attending, and it’s DFJ’s goal to create a safe and friendly atmosphere while inspiring and challenging the students in the art of dance. The studio isn’t just a place where students learn a dance; it is where they learn how to dance. This is what sets Dance for Joy a part from other dance studios.  The End of the Year Show is an option for all students enrolled at DFJ. Show rehearsal is separate from the student’s weekly technique classes, allowing students to take full advantage of their dance training.

All of the faculty at Dance For Joy are highly trained and certified dance teachers who have dedicated most of their lives to the discipline of dance.  Each teacher takes a special pride in passing on their knowledge, experiences and passion for dance to each student at DFJ.

Dance for Joy is located at 1025 Rt. 70 Suite 2,Brielle.For more

Downtown Dance Academy, located on West Water Street in downtown Toms River, it opened for business in June 2009. Owner and Director Laura Stout is currently preparing for the Academy’s second season.

Laura Stout has been dancing since she was a small child. During her education she studied Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, and Tap. Later, Laura trained at Mason Gross School of the Arts, at Rutgers University, where she studied Modern, Choreography, and Ballet. She has been teaching dance in Monmouth and Ocean Counties for over ten years before establishing Downtown Dance Academy.

Dance has been in Laura’s life for as long as she can remember and wants to spread the joy and passion onto the children she teaches; “I love to watch the students grow into beautiful dancers, see the look in their eyes when they get that step they have been working so hard on, and to witness first hand that I have passed my love of dance onto them.”

All members of the faculty at Downtown Dance Academy are highly skilled in their disciplines and have experience in both performing and teaching dance. The goal of the Downtown Dance Academy is to encourage every child to explore and expand their talent and abilities. The faculty pride themselves on providing each child with a quality dance education, as well as helping to build individual confidence and self discipline in a warm and caring environment.

Downtown Dance Academy offers a variety of dance disciplines including Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Stretch & Strength, and Zumba. The Academy also offers performance and higher education opportunities with the Junior and Senior Dance Troupe.

Aside from the exercise, there are many benefits of dance. Dance is not only an excellent way to build muscle strength, coordination and balance, but it is also a way of building self esteem, listening skills, patience, and the ability to work within a team.

The Academy has many students who spend hours in the studio every week, not only to further their dance education, but also because they just enjoy being there. Downtown Dance Academy staff want every child who walks through the doors to feel safe and comfortable in the studio.

“The bond between dancers is unlike any other and we enjoy watching these bonds grow and mature into lifelong friendships.” – Laura Stout

Staycation-Stay Close To Home & Save Money

By Tricia Berwick

High gas prices and a weak economy have forced many American families to reevaluate their vacation plans this summer.   Instead of traveling many miles to amusement parks and other popular tourist attractions, more people are opting for a “staycation” instead.  This new type of “vacation” has become quite the buzzword during these troubled economic times.  Some decide to turn their backyards into a vacation paradise and really get into vacation mode by cutting off contact with the outside world.   Others stay local and visit the sights in nearby towns.  However you decide to enjoy your “staycation” this summer, the important thing is to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation without spending a lot of money.

If finances are really tight and day trips are not possible, simply enjoy all of the comforts of home without the distractions and responsibilities of everyday work life.  In order for this type of “staycation” to be successful, it requires a lot of effort and willpower to really unplug yourself from outside connections.  The computer and the phone both need to be turned off.  Your office also needs to know that you really are on vacation and that you cannot be disturbed!   Now start changing into relaxation mode and let the “staycation” begin!   Make yourself a fancy breakfast of homemade waffles and fruit.  Have that second cup of coffee you always want but never have time to enjoy.  Read entire newspaper articles instead of just scanning the headlines.  Take time to do the small, daily things you normally don’t have time for as you are rushing out the door.  Who knows?  Maybe you’ll even decide to go back to bed after breakfast.  It is your “staycation,” so take time to lounge and relax as you would on a normal vacation.

After breakfast, decide if you will enjoy your backyard and sit by the pool with a drink and a good book.  If you don’t have a swimming hole, maybe it’s time to invest in that hammock you’ve always wanted.    Instead of going away, some people are turning their backyards into an oasis.  Cindy Harrison of Point Pleasant spent a few extra dollars this summer to maximize her outdoor living space.

“My husband and I have fixed up the backyard so we have a sitting area with an outdoor rug” says Harrison, who is the mother of two-year-old twins.   “The kids have a small pool that they love, too.”

While you are outside, maybe you’ll order in some lunch for a special treat.  Or perhaps you won’t even make it onto your patio or deck.  Maybe you’ll decide to have a “pajama day” and watch movies, pop popcorn, and have some pizza delivered.   Since you’re on vacation, really let loose and abandon all chores for the week—no vacuuming, no making the bed, cleaning out the closets, or pulling weeds.  You wouldn’t do those things on a regular vacation would you?  Whether you are outside or inside, the important thing is to detach yourself from your daily work life and relax.

In fact, for many parents, having a “staycation” is more relaxing, especially if they have younger children.  When you are at home, you don’t have to pack up the pampers, bottles of formula, and special toys.  Everything is right at your disposal.  But, in order to fight off the crankiness, it’s best to keep the kids busy with planned activities.  Create different games and activities, such as a horseshoes or hopscotch.  Let the kids make sno-cones as a special treat.  Maybe you could even rent a movie and a projector from your local library and show the film on the side of your house or on a large sheet.  Invite the neighbors over with their kids and hand out candy and popcorn for the kids to enjoy while watching.

Talk to your kids and ask them what they would like to do on the “staycation.”  Let them plan a list of daily activities they would enjoy doing.   Kids love when they are provided a say in how the family spends free time.  Maybe they want to stay up late and catch fireflies in the dark.  Then set up a tent and spend the night camping in your own yard!  That certainly doesn’t cost a lot of money and definitely helps in preserving the “staycation” budget.

If you do have some money in the bank and would like to venture out, try researching some local points of interest.  How about a museum or a new restaurant?  What about visiting a new park, bringing a picnic lunch and enjoying a good book?  For the ultimate in relaxation, how about visiting a day spa for one or two of their services?

Harrison is certainly feeling the economic crush this summer and had to alter her plans accordingly.  However, with a little ingenuity, she is still planning on enjoying a great summer with her family.

“We had originally planned to fly down to North Carolina and stay with friends but the airline prices are as high as ever because of the fuel costs. So we had to nix that idea and be more creative,” says Harrison.  “We are actually going to a Yankees game with friends and leaving our twins at home. Luckily, my parents have a house down in Cape May so we will go and spend a few nights there with the twins.  They have a pool and we plan on taking them to the Cape May Zoo.  We also visit Bay Head beach a few times a week.   My husband and I will be going to a concert in August, too.   So even though we aren’t packing up and heading to an exotic location we have managed to fill our summer calendar with some fun family and couple activities.”

All of these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg.  Ideas for how to enjoy a restful and relaxing “staycation” are virtually unlimited!  With a little planning and creativity, it can be accomplished.  The important thing to remember is to treat it like a regular vacation, as if you were traveling somewhere.  Remember to take pictures, too.  You wouldn’t forget taking your camera on a vacation, would you?  Your “staycation” should be no different.  You are enjoying yourself and making memories with the ones you love.

Martial Arts Teaching Proper Technique And Safety

Martial Arts schools have grown in numbers over the years.  They are in high demand for children, teenagers and adults.  Some choose a school on the recommendation of a neighbor or friend, it’s close to home or it is inexpensive.  The State of New Jersey mandates no regulation on operating or teaching martial arts.  Hence, the main reason there are so many schools to choose from in a small area.  There are many forms of Martial Arts being taught and the consumer needs to investigate when choosing a school for themselves or their children.  Before registering for martial arts instruction, be aware of what is being taught in the class and what is being said to young children when parents are not around.  It is imperative you know instructors have proper credentials and are knowledgeable in teaching Martial Arts.  Observing classes and instructors, getting recommendations, and interviewing owners is what will aid in the success of learning the appropriate use and correct techniques in martial arts.

An issue that has exploded over the past few months is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).  MMA is a full contact sport using different fighting techniques from boxing to martial arts and everything in between.  It is performed in a cage-like octagon ring with two opponents and a referee.  It has been described as a no holds barred fighting frenzy.  Since this barbaric entertainment emerged and gained rapid popularity, additional safety rules have been incorporated.  However, MMA takes fighting to a whole new level.  Like boxing, the objective is to knock out your opponent.    Fighters throw each other to the ground and grab hold to make their opponent immobile.  Submission holds gain an advantage since one of the fighters is physically impaired to move.  The other fighter pummels away at the head or body to achieve a severely beaten state even unconsciousness.

This is the new frenzy surrounding Martial Arts.  This type of fighting is affecting children, teenagers and young adults to learn this type of martial arts.  It is being taught on computers; teaching viewers to physically abuse and quite possibly harm themselves and others by mimicking what they see on websites and television.  Welcome to the new wild phenomena of Mixed Martial Arts.

MMA combines grappling, jiu-jitsu and traditional martial arts to overtake an opponent.   Grappling is a lot like wrestling with certain holds, sweeps and throws.  The WWF entertainment factor becomes reality in an MMA cage.  Striking your opponent with your fist or elbow is perfectly legal while you have them pinned to the ground in a choke hold.  Lifting and throwing down your competitor to perform a clinch hold and punching their face or body is also allowed.   Jiu-jitsu is a type of martial arts that teaches choking, submission holds and potentially breaking of bones.  A slightly dazed opponent after a choking move is less likely to offer any resistance.  Immobilizing a fighter to win could lead to unconsciousness, which may or may not be allowed, but is performed.

A 35-year-old MMA fighter, Sam Vasquez, died in Houston, TX on November 30, 2007.  He was hospitalized when he collapsed after being knocked out in the 3rd round of an MMA fight a month earlier.  Doctors performed two surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain.  After the second surgery, he had a stroke and died.    This is the kind of entertainment people of all ages are watching and imitating.

Another instructor in Virginia who teaches Mixed Martial Arts to children kicked an 11-year-old student over 200 times in the abdomen.  This was a challenge to see how many kicks the child could take before falling over.  The child’s parents were not present at the time and did not witness this act.  Parents need to be present at all times when their children are learning karate, jiu-jitsu, tae kwon do or any form of martial arts.  Question instructors and owners on abusive moves and potential dangers you see.

Martial Arts is a precise form of self-defense.  Instructors teach where to hit and how to hit properly without injuring yourself.  Breaking a wooden board the wrong way could fracture or break a hand.  Learning the skill of how to correctly hold your hand while breaking a board allows students the ability to break thicker pieces of wood, as they get older and stronger.  Mastering Martial Arts takes years of practice and teachings.  Utilizing the safety of the techniques ensures no one gets hurt while building character, strength and gaining knowledge.

Parents need to be vigilant that the martial arts being taught to their children, or themselves, is safe.    Schools in the area are beginning to teach a Mixed Martial Arts class andparents may not even be aware there children are learning something dangerous.  Kum Sung stresses safety and proper technique when teaching their students.  No student moves to the next level unless they are proficient in their abilities.  Learning the correct way of hitting, kicking, or breaking a wooden board is what Dr. Sung and his instructors at Kum Sung have mastered over the years.  When locating a Martial Arts school, investigate what they are teaching, how students learn and the credentials of the staff interacting with you or your children.  Dr. Sung describes his Martial Arts teachings as not just a hobby, but a way of life.  This is my heritage and culture this is the same sentiment shared by martial arts masters like Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.  Ensure you can view all classes and know what your children are doing in the class.  Martial Arts is a safe, physically fit activity that promotes self-esteem and success throughout all aspects of life.  Visit kumsungkarate.com or call and speak to Dr. Sung or one of the instructors.  Be aware of what they will and are actually learning.

Date Night Ideas

By Tricia Berwick

Between picking up the kids, making dinner, paying the bills, and cleaning up around the house, who has time for setting up dates with your spouse?  Even though your time and finances may be limited, it’s important to “schedule” time with your mate, just as you would any other activity.  Making time for each other away from the children and all of the stresses involved with daily life is extremely important and beneficial for your marriage and family life.  Kids love to see their parents happy, in love and together.  The only way the love you experienced from your dating days will last, is if you and your partner take the time to date one another.

If money isn’t an issue and you can afford to head out of the house, arrange for a babysitter to come and sit with the kids.  Grandparents are usually always willing to help out and appreciate time with the grandkids.  Or ask the child’s aunt or uncle to assist you.  If you don’t have family nearby, maybe you could swap babysitting with some good friends in the neighborhood.  Choose a restaurant that doesn’t feature kids’ menus, crayons, and strolling clowns with balloons.  Since you have the time alone without the kids in tow, splurge for a romantic, candlelight dinner and enjoy some different foods instead of the normal fare of chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese.  If you happen to sit near a few little creatures, change tables right away!  This is your night not to hear whines, cries, “I need to go potty!” and have food flicked in your face.  So, by all means, move away from the danger zone and don’t feel guilty about it!

If dinner is too expensive, try eating out for breakfast which will definitely save you a few dollars.  Or just go out for a light lunch instead.  Look for coupons in your local newspaper or online to offset the cost.  Many times, restaurants offer a 2-for-1 deal which will significantly reduce your bill.

After dinner, try an activity that you used to enjoy pre-kids.  Maybe you want to lace up your skates and go for a few whirls at your nearest ice rink.  Or perhaps catch a movie that is doesn’t feature a million Disney characters and is rated “G.”  Try a museum that is geared for adults and doesn’t have dress-up clothes.   Or bowl a game or two for some exercise.  If you really want to be adventurous and daring, sign up for lessons together.  Check out your township’s recreation department and see if they have something you might be interested in.  For example, Howell Township Parks and Recreation offers ballroom dancing lessons for couples.  The cost is only $50 for six hour-long lessons which is very reasonable.  This would be a great opportunity to learn a new skill and to get some exercise while having fun and enjoying a few laughs together.  Participating in this type of activity will really regain that emotional connection you once enjoyed with your mate.

If you’re trying not to break the bank on your date night, stroll around a local bookstore, grab a cup of coffee and talk about some of the interesting tidbits you just read.  If you would rather be outdoors, plan an all-day hike or simply go for a walk or a bike ride together.  The important thing is to have a conversation and while some discussion of the kids is expected and allowed, try and keep it to a minimum.

If you really need to watch your pennies, put the kids to bed early and have your own date night in the comfort of your own home.  Feed the kids their supper, but then after their eyes close for the night, cook up a romantic dinner in the kitchen.  Open a bottle of wine, set the dining room table with your china (which you probably don’t use much), and get dressed up for dinner.  Treat it as a formal night out, just in your home.  If you enjoy making desserts more, have a baking date night.  Look through recipes and make some sweet treats together.  If gourmet cooking isn’t your style, stay casual and create an indoor picnic.  Get out your basket, spread out a blanket on the floor and enjoy your “picnic food” of sandwiches and salads.  Play some romantic music in the background and have fun creating either a meal or dessert together.

As for entertainment, you could play a game together such as Trivial Pursuit or one of the new DVD games which test your knowledge of your favorite shows.  Maybe you want to take out a classic board game like Monopoly.  Or rent a movie you missed in the theatre.   Do you have a project you need to work on, but can’t really do it with the kids around?  Go through your photo albums together while the kids are asleep or make a memory book of your family.

If finding a babysitter is just too difficult and you would like to actually leave the house for your date, see if there’s a drive-in movie theatre near your home (driveinmovie.com).  Have the whole family wear their pajamas and bring sleeping bags or blankets.  The kids can watch the show from the front seat while you and your spouse hold hands and cuddle in the back.  The kids will love the atmosphere and you will still enjoy the experience of a romantic date.

It’s true that we’re all busy running around from one activity to the next.  There are many responsibilities and tasks to be completed in the average day.  However, it’s also important to allow some down-time for you and your spouse to reconnect with each other.  Make your relationship a priority and plan a date night for this evening.  It doesn’t matter if it’s expensive or free.  The important thing is to schedule into your life.  There are many ideas to choose from, so no more excuses.  Just get creative and start planning!

Top Family-Friendly Travel Destinations

Another school year has come to a close which means it’s time to gas up the car, pack up the kids, and take a family road trip this summer.  Where will your family visit during the months of July and August?  If you’re stumped for ideas and not sure where to take the troops for a special vacation this year, check out one of Your Child Today’s “Top Nearby Family-Friendly Travel Destinations.”  All of the selected parks and resorts are outside of New Jersey, but luckily for Shore area families, they are all within a reasonable driving distance.

Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Vermont: This all-inclusive family resort, located in the picturesque mountains of Vermont, is well worth the journey north.   In addition to separate activities for kids and adults, there are plenty of events for the entire family as well.

While the kids are kept busy and happy in one of Smugglers’ many camp programs, parents can pursue some of their own hobbies and interests through guided hiking tours, kayaking, fishing clinics, garden tours, and other specialty programs.

Smugglers’ popular health and wellness workshops showcase aromatic herbs, essential oils, and spices this summer under the guidance of knowledgeable herbalists from Vermont’s Purple Shutter Herbs.  New sessions include Herbal Manicure, Bath Fizzies, Lip Balms and Energizing with “Zoom Balls,” a sweet treat made with herbs and spices that deliver an energy boost. Yoga, fitness walking, meditation and aromatherapy classes are also available.

If you would like to enjoy a taste of Vermont, a farmer’s market will be available every Monday morning at Smugglers’. Local farmers and specialty food vendors will offer a bountiful selection of goodies including fresh-from-the-field vegetables, locally raised meats, maple products, artisan cheeses, spicy condiments and wines.

If your family is adventurous and would like to see some of the sights outside of the resort, day trips are also available.   A new outing explores Vermont’s beautiful lakeside “Queen City.”  Resort day trippers have a new outing to choose from with Discover Burlington, which joins perennial favorites A Taste of Vermont and the Montreal Day Trip.   After a stop at a local coffee roaster, guests can head to the shops and boutiques on Burlington’s renowned pedestrian-friendly Church Street Marketplace, take in the waterfront of Lake Champlain and spend time in the lakeside ECHO Center, aninteractive science museum that all ages enjoy. The journey back to Smugglers’ includes a photo opportunity at a covered bridge.

What’s New: This summer, the resort is offering two vacation packages to increase family vacation choices. The Resort’s new SimplySmuggs Vacation Package offers flexibility to families who want to make a la carte selections from the Resort’s varied menu of award-winning children’s programs for ages 3 to 17. Vacation package rates for a family of four in a one bedroom mountainside condominium start at $1176 for a 3 day/3night stay on the SimplySmuggs Vacation Package in July (shorter or longer stays are available).  The Resort’s popular FamilyFest Vacation Package includes Smugglers’ award-winning daylong children’s programs, and offers the best value for families interested in a comprehensive package. Rates for a family of four in a one bedroom mountainside condominium start at $1395 for a 3 day/3 night stay on the FamilyFest Vacation Package in July (shorter or longer stays are available).  Camp activities for ages 3-17 include nature discovery, games, arts and crafts, and pool and waterslide fun.  In addition, children ages 7-15 may elect to concentrate on performance, arts & crafts, nature & hiking or adventure and games.
